We love to hate them and sometimes hate to love them. They are movie villains. Who are your favourites and why? One of my personal favourites is Captain Hook as played by Dustin Hoffman. Far from being the blundering fool as portrayed in Disney's Peter Pan this Hook is devious and underhanded as one would expect a pirate to be yet clearly by dress and manner is upper class. It's an odd mix but this was always one of my favourite childhood movies and much of that owes to Hoffman's superb portrayal of a more gentlemanly Hook.
Gerard Butler's character in Law Abiding Citizen [ame="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rA10RDU9quU"]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rA10RDU9quU[/ame] To me the bad guy's development in any story is much more important than the heroes development. It's like the old saying goes, a hero is only as good as his nemesis.
The enigmatic and coldly charismatic "Agent Smith" from The Matrix; brilliantly played by Hugo Weaving. -- the shot of Agent Smith's reaction as Neo's mouth begins to glue itself together is priceless.--- [ame="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4D7cPH7DHgA"]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4D7cPH7DHgA[/ame] [ame="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UOi6v5DD_1M"]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UOi6v5DD_1M[/ame]
The Lord of the Rings Trilogy did a brilliant job of bringing to life two villains. First I mention the late great (and die hard Tolkien fan) Christopher Lee. He was just PERFECT- that voice - PERFECT for Saruman. [ame="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5JM_ymsW4M0"]Saruman and Sauron discuss the rise of a new world and the Burning of the West Fold - YouTube[/ame] But Saruman wasn't my favorite villain in particular in the books. It was the sheer brilliance and complexity of Smeagol/ Gollum. A character that wasn't good, but not horrible? Or was he? How much did the ring change his character? Twist a person of weak character? Andy Serkis, with a brilliant special effects team managed to bring Gollum to life in a way I never thought could have been done so well. I waited decades to see Smaug brought to life on the big screen and THAT at least - did not disappoint me. Benedict Cumberbatch (sp?) and again the special effects team were magnificent. (Too bad the third movie butchered the Book after Smaug's death.) [ame="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=05pDYZOhZLc"]Bilbo/Smaug Scene - ''Barrel-rider'' - YouTube[/ame]
Got one! Forget the character name but Jack Nicholson in The Departed. Normal fare for him, but it's a bad guy I remember as being completely believable, an completely terrifying. It's a dude you see be halfway normal a do relatively decent things, occasionally spout something half intelligent, then he flips it and becomes someone you remember is dangerous as balls and shows why he's a mob boss.
Ricardo Montalban as Khan in Star Trek 2. [ame="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3i42Smtbmeg"]Star Trek 2 - Khan puts larva in Chekhov's ear. - YouTube[/ame] and, naturally, Darth Vader.
Good form, Ben, good form! I greatly enjoyed Alan Rickman both as Professor Snape (he was an antagonist to young Potter so I'm counting him) and as Hans Gruber (in the 1st Die Hard). And the Joker as played by Heath Ledger and Jack Nicholson, both. I can't decide which of them is more fun to watch.
Tina Turner as Aunt Entity in Mad Max beyond Thunderdome. Saw her in concert once. She came in in that full on armor to sing the theme song- smoke on stage, one part of the stage rose very high while she was on it. It was great!
