In European society there were dances for pleasure and 'dances' for war, some of these took the form of Sword Dances which were also known as phyrric dances after the set patterns employed by warriors of ancient Greece. Thoinot Arbeau's 'Orchesographie' illustrations represent a sword dance in France from the 1550s to the 1580s.
