You think a planet 600 light years away is going to distract people from a global financial crisis of unpreced...oh look, a butterfly.

Man i love reading stuff like this. Space is so intruiging and interesting! I love it! One day, i will fly up in the sky, and ill fly into space, and look at all the billions of interesting things! Like the other galaxies and everything... And ill go through a black hole, and see whats going on there... go inside the stars and stuff.... live ona planet for a few 100 years! yeah....

I like to think there's a bunch of aliens with 4 eyes and 3 breasts currently looking at our planet from Kepler-22b and going "Hmmm that planet is a lot like ours...I wonder if there's life there?". :)

Yay, we have the technology to find a new habitable planet, but we can't even solve our own problems.

Hell, we can't even get to the blinking planet.

    Go humanity.

600 Light years away...so even if we can travel at the speed of light, which is theoretically impossible...it would still take us 600 years to get there... so this planet that might have water, might support life...might be interesting for a few minutes... if that.

Interstellar travel pretty much relies on us finding a way around the speed of light barrier, whether it be via wormhole or busting through the speed of light like a swiss neutrino on MDMA.

Are we forgetting the "faster than light particles" controversy in Europe! They ran the experiment again after considering everybody's advice and got the same result. Now isn't that a happy coincidence for the conspiracy nuts to salivate over. ;)

We've more or less screwed the pooch on this planet and crapped on the sofa and in the bath. Time to find a new place to live 'cause I aint cleaning crap out the bath for nobody.

It is 2.4 times bigger than earth, but that's not a guarantee of what percent of useable land there is.

The faster than light particles have been tested and seemed to do exactly what they say they do...however they are particles..we are not.

    2.4x earth size?

Well assuming the density is the same that's about 1.3x Earth's gravity... Not awful.

Much as I admire the "utilitarian approach", I'm inclined to agree. I hope it gets a nickname (they're probably waiting untill they actually know something about it).

So, it's 2.4 times larger than Earth and they have no idea what it's made of, or whether it has an atmosphere. Nonetheless they are calling it "earth-like". Evidently the criteria for "earth" are somewhat broader than I imagined...

It's good news for climate change though. Apparently, even if earth becomes a barren rock, gets drowned by the melting of polar ice or somehow becomes a gaseous cloud, it will still be "earth-like", which presumably means we can still survive here.

    What a relief. :D

Are the scientists calling it earth like, or are the media calling it earth like?
