Hey, a while ago i was given this scroll by a chinese girl but she could only semi-read it as it was in traditional chinese, and now i've forgotten the semi-definition - anyone able to help with this one?

Here's a picture of the same phrase written more clearly

Yuan shui bi qian li, xi yang hong ban lou.

    An approximate translation is:

Emerald waters stretch for a thousand miles in the distance, the evening sun reddens half a building.

thanks :) is it a common phrase?
how come there are fewer characters in your image?

It is the first two lines of a poem. I think people like to hang it up when they move into a new house. Usually it will be written with five characters on one side and five on the other side of a door. The smaller characters in your image are the date and name of the writer, I believe, but they're hard to make out. I think the name is "Zhong Ren Shu." Hope that helps. :)
