I don't think his boxing skills made a jot of difference here.

Actually they might have a little bit - he jabbed it in the mouth first and when that didn't work he uppercutted it on the snout

Of course the cynic in me says that the fact he is a hunter and knew to whack a bear on the snout a a way to distract it, but still.........

Black Bears aren't aggressive and rarely persist with a defensive attack, especially if its 'victim' fights back. He probably would have done just as well by yelling at the bear.

They are generally the size of a large dog too.

This is pretty telling to me:

'Mr Nelson said: "It just turned back around and walked away like nothing ever happened and followed the cub. So I really lucked out there."'

If she wanted a fight it would be a different story.

Was this "Canadian man" called Logan? And did claws sprout out of his hands?

When did he get a chance to weigh it?

That's 80lbs heavier than the adult average stated on Wikipedia.

Like I said, if it wanted to fight it would be a different story, but we're talking about a creature 4 1/2 feet long, not the image of a huge grizzly that people tend to think of when people talk of bears.

He was a boxer. He instinctively put the bear in the correct weight class by eye.*

*Please note my lack of seriousness on this subject. :)

As the average dog over 100lbs would SHRED a human I see this as small comfort

Of course. I've said several times that if that bear wanted a fight then we wouldn't be hearing from this guy about his boxing prowess. But as well as size, different types of bear have very different temperaments.

I'd say Mitch is more a twink than a bear.

    Where is this thread heading?

I don't know about all this bear stuff but it reminds me of a saying a mate would throw around all the time.. usually when we were up to no good..
"if you're going to be a bear... be a grizzly"

    yep. :)
