we even have our six year old 9th gups break boards, its the same width as adult boards just cut to I think 6 inches wide instead
Breaking/destruction For my 1st kup grading I have to do: Jump reverse turning kick 1 board, air break 3 boards any hand technique 4-5 boards any foot technique Any suggestions for either technique? I'm thinking straight punch, back fist strike or palm heel strike; and back piercing kick or side piercing kick. Also any guidance on squeezing out every last drop of power to get through 5 boards? Thanks
The boards are one inch thick. They're made of wood, not the re-breakable type. I agree this does sound a bit harsh - unsuprisingly I've never actually seen somebody manage this for their 1st kup grading. Our association's breaking syllabus could do with some revising actually: for 1st degree it's 3 boards any hand, 3 boards any foot technique. Strange, no?
I'm currently with the GTUK, which I think is the second largest ITF association in the UK after TAGB... I could be wrong. It is run by Master Roy Oldham (VIII), my instructor is a IV degree. Yup it's pine wood alright. You guys probably think I'm nuts, making this up, or have a really poor association - trust me the teaching is great... just some weird destruction
No I don't think that. I've heard stranger things. You see, most clubs break focus boards. And to break 3 of them with a hand technique is really something. Especially for a colourbelt. Now that you've confirmed it's pine... Yeah I'm pretty sure I'd sidekick my way through 4 or 5 of them. I've seen pics of KickChick doing 4!
Side piercing or jumping back kick every time. 5 boards for a colour belt? You're not one of those 7ft giants that seems to smash their way through just about everyting are you? I wouldn't go for a straight puch if i could avoid it. It seems a pretty quick way to mangle a hand if you fail.
If by "7ft giant that seems to smash their way through just about everything" you mean "5'11" 17 year old who weighs 11 stone" then yes
So I gotta ask then.. whats the point of it? Do they fail if they dont break? Not that strange for BB's. At our schools its one black and one cream board for hand techniques which equals 3 breaker boards or around 4 pine. It is strange asking that of a 1st kup (the 5 boards) especially if no one can do it! That said, for 5 boards with foot, Id do back kick. Stuart
If you can't break it then you don't instantly fail, but it is counted against you. Yeah three boards for black belt sounds reasonable, it just seems a bit of a leap from the other colour belts - until now I've only ever had to do two. I'm not complaining as such, it's just a bit confusing.
like Stuart said back kick, I've heard several times that that is the strongest kick. I know i can break that many with a jump 360 back kick, but i'm 6'5 and 200 lbs. There isn't any way the boards wouldn't brake that way.
They have to do that or else no-one would have passed the grading if no ones ever done it there! Still think its a bit hard a break for the standard students.. well it is if no-ones ever broke it! Well 5 from 2 is a leap. we use a black board for our adult students from 8th kup onwards, so an extra cream board (making roughly 3) isnt as big a jump as you guys. Still, I dont see the point of requesting peole break something that for most of that level is simply a pipedream - did I say that already! Either way, good luck with it and dont forget to get a photo as proof Stuart
Lookit this, it can be done: http://www.gt-uk.net/videos/player.asp?video_id=12 Side/back kick definitely strongest for breaking 5" - good luck !!!!!!!!!!!
Hmm... When I hold 5 boards I can barely get my hands across them to hold them, much less get my palms braced behind them for someone to kick. You guys have a lot of basketball players to do your board holding or is there some kind of mechanism you've got built for holding 5 boards? Kintanon
Kintanon is right. Probably the biggest, or perhaps second biggest, problem with breaking 5 is that the holders can't manage them properly and get a good grip and lock-out.
It was 5 for a sidekick that I did at my last grading for 3rd dan. I've also done a 5 bd roundhouse as well. http://www.martialartsplanet.com/photos/showphoto.php/photo/2541/sort/1/size/medium/cat/500/page/1 As you can see we use a boardholder for 4 or more boards. We had an attempt at last board breaking class of 10 boards with a sidekick from a 3rd dan.(not me ) --- I seem to be holding at 5 for now 5 boards at 1st kup does seem to be a very advanced breaking requirement. Dare I even ask what is required of your blackbelts?
This is where the confusion lies. From the video those boards are not 1" in thickness I dont think. Either that or an inch is not what it use to be Im not dismissing the break etc. Just the confusion it leads to. Looking at all the boards it seems about equal to 2.5 boards that we use.. hence why I was a bit befuddled by the 5 boards for coloured belt issue. I have seen others claim even more but with even thinner boards. With wood alot depends on the type of wood as well, as well as its dryness (some are deliberitly dried to make them much easier to break - not that Im saying those were). Stuart
I can't comment about breaking as I do not do it and will not for at least three years and probably a lot longer However husband and son do but have a problem practising because of the problem of holding the boards - I have been trying to look for a board holder for them but other than some plans (we are not DIY competent in our house) I have not been able to find one. Any suggestions?
