(Not sure if this is the most appropriate forum, so Mods please move it if it isn't.) Has anyone here ever obtained military service records for a relative? I'm very keen to find out more about my great-grandfather's service history during WWI, but I've no idea how easy it is to get hold of the information I want. I have a copy of his enlistment papers, and I'm fairly sure that he was invalided out at some point due to being gassed, but beyond that I have nothing to go on. Any pointers would be VERY gratefully received.
Couple of links that may be helpful Johnno. http://www.veterans-uk.info/service_records/service_records.html http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/records/looking-for-person/britisharmysoldierafter1913.htm Failing that, a PM to someone like JWT may help.
Try this site. http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documentsonline/medals.asp If you have the details of his regiment it will make the search easier. Also it might help if you know the type of gas he was subject to as chlorine was first used in 1915 but mustard gas wasn't used until early 1917. I found my grandfather's service details in the national archives. He served with the 63rd Royal Naval Divison at Yypres,Gallipolli and the Somme. Edit.Just noticed that Simon has already posted the link.
