Not so sure what is so bad about this other than the students who are getting "tested" have generally poor technique. However, at least the pad holders are making them defend. If this is a test then you wouldn't expect the trainer to be coaching them as per a normal pad holding session. Nowhere near as bad as the guy with the sticks. wtf is that all about?
Great thread! Heres my contribution,I dislike most things by this guy! [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0_AxdrioWCQ&feature=relmfu"]YouTube - Donnie B. - Old Style Muay Thai Clinch / Knee Defense[/ame]
And this clip. [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p44ZNq3NwNs"]YouTube - The Complete Muay Thai Home Study Course[/ame]
No, it's not the guys being tested who have bad technique. It's the guys doing the testing. That is not what any sort of test should look like for any martial art - it doesn't teach or test jack all. I mean, the guys actually hold the pads for a kick and then when the student goes to kick, they kick his standing leg away from him - what the hell is that supposed to be testing!? If I hold the pads for a technique, then that's the target presented itself. After or before that I can throw techniques to make them block etc. but again, the point is to MAKE THEM REACT, not just to give newbies an absolute pasting. The whole video looks like it's more for the instructors' pleasure than testing the students.
I agree MB, Also I havent seen many if any decent boxers produced by that particular USA Muay Thai Association.
Correct me If I'm wrong, but this guys stance looks completely off. He's leaning way too forward and putting his weight on the front foot. [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rP9SfF2Y4Z0"]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rP9SfF2Y4Z0[/ame] Too side on, not stepping into the kick and not utilizing the hips. Bad, bad and just bad. There are no other words to describe how bad this video is. [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AXPe9F3V3C0"]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AXPe9F3V3C0[/ame]
Is it just me or does the white guy look like James May from Top Gear? [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h3WP9oi4AiY"]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h3WP9oi4AiY[/ame]
Yeah his stance is horrible but to be fair to him on the second video - you're not supposed to train by stepping into every kick. Every thai i've ever met has told me to train it explosively from the spot - if I need to and the situation allows I can easily step into the kick but actually training it this way so that you can't kick WITHOUT the step is a very bad habit.
I'm just going with what Bas Rutten said, by stepping in I mean turning the front foot first into a 45 degree (or side on) angle so you stretch out the hips a little. By turning the foot out first, you are kicking through the center line (or through your opponent). But you can't properly do it when your stance is as narrow and side on as the guy in the video.
His stance isn't side on so much as it is too long. Yeah Ive seen the bas video and it's a good one for explaining the mechanics of a kick and it's true that you'll get more power into the kick - it's also slower, more telegraphic and can leave you in a poor position if your opponent blocks it.
