wednesday 1 hour BJJ Drilled the sao paulo pass again, got to refine it more. It was great to see a few others recently promoted. I rolled with 2 other new blue belts who seem to be on par with my sparring temperament and skill which makes for great sparring. 5 rounds sparring including the purple belts inducting me into the world it wrist locks in sparring My peak flow has been lower this week, so i expected a rough session, but my lungs coped fine.
Monday 1 hour BJJ Asthma has been bad, driving at the weekend for a stay in a woodland lodge, which meant driving for a few hours. Wasn't sure about whether i should train, but I went with my default; yes. Worked de la riva sweeps. Something i need to work on more as I found myself in opportunity to set up in sparring a few times, then didn't know where to go from there. Sparring was a struggle, adding to the fact that recently promoted blue means that the white belts go harder on me now, and i get to roll with all the coloured belts more frequently One white belt decided it was a hard roll, so i got kicked in the face whilst they were going 100% they managed to get an armlock on and cranked that quickly Lucky I tap early and often. Feeling pretty rough today. I squeezed in a lunch time nap which perked me up a bit, so hopefully I'm good to train tomorrow.
Tuesday 30 minutes lacrosse ball and trigger point roller work. Wednesday Was feeling pretty bad again in the morning, asthma not good. I thought i would go and see how i do. 1 hour BJJ I partner up with someone else who had a minor injury as they knew me well enough to respect that and not go hard. I said that's good, my asthma as bad so happy to work with them and take it easy Worked de la riva sweeps again, including moving to single leg takedown, then onto shin to shin guard with a sweep. Worked this in specific sparring, then onto normal sparring. Felt pretty good by the end. Thursday Feeling pretty sore and tired, stayed out of the cold. Friday 1.6 mile walk. Asthma isn't getting worse, but isn't much better.
A 1 mile walk most days, but a fairly sedentary season. Thursday 26th Got out for a run today, first time since October 2.8 miles 32 minutes 153 HR bpm avg. Was good to stretch the legs, accompanied by the dog who wanted to run a lot more.
Asthma flare up happened today. I had mentally made plans for a workout routine which I'm glad i didn't write down as I'm currently feeling very frustrated about it. Fortunately not a chest infection, but i must keep fairly inactive for the next week to prevent any stress on my body whilst having extra steroids.
Okay, so you've written that, which means that you clearly you know what you SHOULD be doing, but I know you (as in, you have been very open on this forum, about struggling with 'downtime') and know that this will be difficult for you to stick to - Don't give in, fight all your urges to train, be bored, be fed up, but above all, do give yourself time to get better. Travess
thanks all for your supportive words. I've managed to avoid too much and a walk, a casual 1.5 mile, today with the family whilst wrapped up warm to get my active "fix". I have plenty of instructional videos to watch to keep my mind occupied.
after a daily walk and finishing steroids, i went back to the GP. They re-read my notes and I am back on the steroid inhaler i was told to phase out. So after a few days things were getting better, my peak flow almost back to 600 (about as good as it gets for me these days). Yesterday i went back to BJJ and was very happy about it. Tuesday 1 hour BJJ Half guard escape from flattened with cross face. 3 rounds of sparring. Was great to be back and everyone was very welcoming after being away from the mats nearly 3 weeks. Wednesday 1 hour BJJ. Half guard escape from double underhook. 4 rounds sparring. Feeling sore and partners were particularly more energetic than me. I'm hoping to get more walking in and I will look at a gradual lifting plan to get 1 times a week.
Thursday 9th Jan 2020 feeling sore today all over. I opted for a light lifting session in the plan to: a) get the routine back in place b) a bit of light workout to help recovery c) I was gifted with olympic dumbels which I wanted to "try" out Deadlift 20kg x10, 60kgx5, 80kgx5, 60kgx5, 20kgx10 dumbell shoulder press 8kg (just dumbell) x10, 13kgx10, 13kgx10, 13kgx10 dumbell curl 13kg 3x10 neck harness 5kg 3x10 pushup 5, 8 leg raises 2x10 1.6 mile walk.
an active weekend, but enough to help recovery. Sunday 10 minutes stretching and 20 min roller/ball/trigger point Monday 1 hour BJJ Change in timetable meant that I can now attend the advanced class (blue belts and up). worked on passing knee sheild, and also retaining/sweeping from the knee sheild. sparring, my health feels much better and second week back, so a lot less getting smashed and felt ok. Tuesday sleep ok, recovered well and I felt good enough for a light workout: 12 minutes of bag work. warmup 3x3 min rounds with 30 second rest. 1.9 mile very easy run (was more than I planned as I forgot the distance of the local park in the plan). 20 min roller and ball self physio. Wednesday another good night sleep (relatively) my resting HR has gone down, which is a good sign. 1 hour BJJ working spider guard to triangle and omplata (also added wristlock) felt strong during sparring, didn't get completely smashed. Things I definitely need to focus on: positional escapes (side and full mount), attacks from guard (I am ok with sweeps usually, but rarely get submissions from guard) and under half guard reversal/sweep.
Thursday A short and low intensity lift: Low bar squat 20kgx5, 40kgx5, 50kg 2x5 Chin up (assisted) 2x6 Curl 3x10 x 12kg Neck harness 5kgx 8, 10, 10 Leg raises 2x10
Friday BJJ 1 hour Feeling tired, but I had the rare opportunity to make it today, so thought i would come and enjoy, and see how things go. Ground work; spinning arm bar from side mount. Worked the hitch hiker escape and followed up this with triangle on the escapist. Sparring, definitely felt it, gassing out quickly. An observation on being a new blue belt, the 4 stripe white belts certainly like to ramp up the intensity
traveling most of the weekend 8+ hours in the car usually means asthma problems, but ok so far. Monday 1 hour BJJ De la Riva pass to knee slide, or backstep to side control Sparring I felt in better condition than last week. Pulled off more butterfly sweeps than i have in a long time, one of those days that a few techniques clicked.
Tuesday 13 minute bag work. 2 minute warmup and 3x3min rounds. Medium intensity, mostly without structure, added a few round kicks on the last round. 2x10 leg raises and stretching to cool down. I planned a run also, but generally feeling tired, so opted for a 20 min walk instead
Wednesday 1 hour BJJ De la riva x pass and folding pass. Thursday 20 min walk Weight lifting Deadlift 20kgx10, 60kgx5, 80kgx5, 100kg 2x5, 80kgx5, 60kgx5 Dumbbell shoulder press/curl superset 13kgx10, 18kg 2x10 Barbell Lunge 20kg x10, 20, 20 Neck harness 5kgx10, 7.5kg 2x12 Pushups 2x10 Leg raises 12, 14, 14 5 min stretching.
a gentle walk at the weekend (1.5 mile I think; I didn't track it). Monday 1 hour BJJ from side control, worked on pinning near arm, then the far arm into americana arm lock. a variation was working on spin to arm bar. sparring, I have (when possible) focused on framing, so that escapes were easier. I have felt that this focus has improved my escapes. In addition to this, when they work a standing break ont the closed guard, I actively waited for this to focus on moving to an open guard, more frequently de la riva (which we drilled a bit recently). Tuesday 2.5 mile easy run with the doggy. 25 mins 159bpm avg HR. 30 min rest, then 12mins bag work (warm up set, then 3x3 min rounds with 30s rest) 2 x15 leg raises 5 min stretching. Wednesday 1 hour bjj kimura from side control, and variation of spin to arm bar (I should be able to pull some of these off by now, but never quite get it in practise).
