Thursday I slept well, HRV was 50 (good). A 1.5 walk in the park, having to avoid the local route due to the puppy getting 3 ticks on Tuesday I don't walk her off lead as there is too much distraction, so using a retractable lead. Clearly she wanted to run not walk, so as I walked, she ran circles round me the whole way Managed to get a small nap in to aid recovery, feeling very sore all over at the moment. Evening BJJ Takedown Similar to Tuesday Drop seoi nage to the opposite site (starting same grip) Felt like I was getting it a bit better. Ground work Sweep from half, pulling outside hand up and round to load up high on the chest, roll back to sweep and land in top half. A few rounds of sparring, felt like another good learning experience. I need to work on getting guard quicker on strong top players who "smesh" me in side control
Friday 21st Walk/run 2.93 miles 37mins 130bpm AVG HR Saturday Recovery, some allotment work, digging up fresh potatoes Sunday Evening calisthenics superset Pushups 3x10 Squat 3x10 Bridge 3x10 Legs up 3x10 21mins 101 AVG HR Monday Felt my chest playing up, sleeping HR was good, but snoring much more, which means asthma issues. A short walk with the dog and not much else. Tuesday Steady walk with the dog in the day Evening BJJ 1 hour Ground work Side control, far arm control to sit back to triangle. A few great rounds of sparring. Wednesday Not able to get to BJJ the next few days I went back to some much neglected lifting. Bench 20kg x5, 40x5, 50x5, 60x5, 70x5, 60x5 Squat (high bar) 20kgx5, 40x5, 50x5, 60x5, 70x5, 60x5 Curls 20kg 2x10 Neck harness 2.5kg 2x10 10 mins stretching 5 minutes shadow boxing. Very hot! Got a lot of potatoes and evening watered.
A rare selfie, for the sole reason that I am the proud owner of a new t shirt. Thanks @Mitch and the MAP team
Monday 2.27 mile walk run : 30 mins 10 mins calisthenics 5 min stretching Tuesday BJJ 1 hour Ground work Pendulum sweep on opponent standing from closed guard I've been studying the over under pass on video a fair amount and was able to apply it on 2 people in sparring. Wednesday BJJ Back take from side control, 2 gift wrap options, one with the leg over, the other with them blocking with their leg up. Tried to work it into sparring, but was difficult as I was sore so I was rolling fairly light. Thursday BJJ 1 hour My body feels sore, but energy levels up today. Ground work Worked the same drill as yesterday, glad to refine it. Sparring, although I didn't feel gassed, I think I was fatigued enough to affect my thought flow and reaction speed. I had brain lock up a few times in the middle of setting up passes, sweeps and submissions. I still feel I learnt from it as I worked on defense in sparring which I seem to be able to deal with well enough when that fatigued. Friday 2.3 mile 28 mins more running than walking at a slow pace. 5 minutes stretching With the bottle top kick going viral, I encouraged my daughter to give it a go before starting her TKD class. She gave it a go with a hook kick and managed it first go A bit of harmless fun before class. Saturday Recovery
Sunday Allotment work, digging and weeding, worked up a sweat. I should probably set it as an activity on my watch. Monday 5 minutes skip with 30s rest about 2 min in 1.95 mile walk/slow run run 27 mins 10 mins calisthenics Lunges 2x16 Legs up 2x10 Pushup 2x10 5 minutes stretching Tuesday Evening BJJ 1 hour Ground work: Hip bump sweep/kimura sparring for 25 minutes Some hard rolling, everyone seemed to be going for it Felt exhausted at the end Managed to pull off the flower sweep I'd been working on for a while Found a large bump on my shin, I don't know if this happened in sparring or just be being clumsy (I don't feel much on my shins). Packed ice and compressed on it seemed to help with the swelling. Wednesday Recovery day.
Thursday BJJ 1 hour Ground work, Not sure the name of the choke, like a baseball bat choke. From side control, reach under near side to grip under collar. Pin the other hand with the head, ear deep thumb in grip, drop elbow toward and knees of the floor driving up with the elbow. Also a variation from North South, moving over to side control. Sparring. Tried to work the over under pass, knee slice pass and flower sweep. Items definitely needing attention: Side control defense/escape and mount defence/escape. Friday Weights Easing back into squat 20kgx5, 40x5, 50x5, 60x5, 70x5, 70x5 Bench 20x5, 40x5, 60x5, 70x8 Curl 20kg 2x12 Ran out of time so continued later Pushups 2x10 Lunges 2x14 Back to work, then finished an hour later Curl 20kg 2x12 Neck harness 5kg 10,14,14,10 Bridges 2x10 Legs up from back 2x10 Back roll 2x6 10 mins stretching
Saturday Recovery Sunday The usual allotment work. Felt sore in the legs from the Friday squats Monday 2.8 mile walk/run 39 minutes Finished with 30 minutes of light lifting and calisthenics. OHP 20kgx5, 25x5, 30x5 Row 30x5, 40x5, 50x5 Curl 20kg 3x10 Neck harness 5kg 3x10 Pushups 2x10 Legs up 2x10 Lunges 2x10 Shadow boxing 5 minutes Stretching 5 minutes Ordered a new sports watch on Amazon deal with a big discount, and it arrived the same day So after initial setup I planned to test it on a run on Tuesday.
Tuesday 1.6 mile run 17 mins with the new watch. 10 min ice bath Evening BJJ 1 hour Takedown Reverse drop seoi nage. Getting back into this, the drop onto the knees I find difficult to program as I kept landing on my toes. Ground work Paper cut choke from side control and North South. 3 rounds of sparring. focused on defense against higher grades. Pulled off my first ever traingle submission in sparring (struggled to finish this every time previous). Wednesday 4 mile run 38 mins 163 BPM AVG HR. 10 minutes stretching. 10 min ice bath
Thursday BJJ 1 hour Reverse Drop seoi nage. I feel I am getting the swing of it now. I still hesitate on the drop the first few times in drilling. Side control switch to arm bar. I really like this setup, I rarely pull it off on sparring, I think I realised that this is because I usually go to mount from side control, so I may think about brining this into sparring more. 3 rounds of sparring. Worked the over under pass again successfully a few times. Friday I planned a run, but work was mayhem, didn't get any time free.
Was away the week of 21st for work. Missed out on the BJJ grading, but got to see the pictures of lots of the 4 stripes getting promoted. Looked like a great event! Tuesday in the hotel before work 2 mile treadmill run Dumbbell bench 10kg X10, 20kgx 10, 40kgx10, 45kg 3x10 Wednesday 2 mile treadmill run Stretching 10 mins Shadow boxing 2 minutes. Didn't have time for any other workout. I took my Gi in the off chance I'd have time to visit the legendary blue Renzo basement in NYC, but I only had a fleeting visit before flying home overnight Friday. Felt pretty ruined from the flight and minor jet lag, slept most of the weekend Tuesday 30th July BJJ 1 hour Back to it! Takedown: O uchi gari. I felt like I struggled with the foot work. Ground work. Triangle from under side control. Really liked this setup, also an option for straight arm lock ude gatame, or return to guard. 3 rounds of sparring. Wednesday Recovery Thursday BJJ 1 hour Takedown O uchi gari Groundwork From under side control, moving away and as they go for near side jujigatame, roll back curl arm over the head to break posture, eziekiel whilst moving legs away into North South. 3 rounds sparring I seem to end in arm traingle more frequently, I find this a hard one to finish. Submitted with a cross collar strangle, which I haven't done since my judo days (22+ years ago ) Still focusing on pendulum sweep from guard, also working on attacks from guard which I feel is one of my weaker areas, along with side and mount escape. Friday 2.4 mile run 24 mins this was on a field, so it felt a lot harder than running on my usual paved routes. Dog was off lead, and mostly looked confused as to why I was running in circles.
yikes, missed a bit with a few busy weeks. Monday 5th; 1.5 mile run Tuesday BJJ 1 hour Wednesday BJJ 1 hour Thursday 2 mile run and 10 mins calisthenics Friday long weekend in the forest, lots of walking Tuesday, back home all alone (well me and the pets) wife and kids off to Disney 2 mile walk in the day. BJJ 1 hour Wednesday 2 mile walk, BJJ 1 hour Thursday 2 mile walk, BJJ 90 mins after 3 days on the go I felt pretty sore. Friday 2 mile run Saturday/Sunday I felt quite run down. Weekend of recovery. In BJJ I've continued to try and focus on setting up attacks from the guard - no successful subs, I still find sweeping and attack from mount easier to execute at the moment. Cross collar chokes I focused on setting up which helped me pull them off again in sparring. Working with a lot more skilled partners I focused on defense a lot more from under side control/mount. Still need to work on side control escapes. It's likely that I won't be back at training for 2 weeks with various family activities planned. Currently have a sore throat and chest, so the rest is probably well timed.
Wednesday 21st BJJ 1 hour Working from low mount to S mount, then to arm bar. I struggled getting the foot round to the head for the S (stiff hips) if I stretch a lot I can do this, but I think it's more of a hip position. Rolled at about 50% as I was going away on holiday and didn't want to over do it. A week away involved a lot of walking. I stopped taking antihistamines medicine as it made me ridiculously tired, unfortunately that meant a week of sneezing and coughing. Took dog for a run on Tuesday, 3 miles in 31 minutes. 10 minutes stretching. Thursday 1.5 mile run 13 minutes. 5 minutes stretching After a 5 hour drive back my chest is feeling rough. I'm hoping it clears up before I go back to BJJ on Tuesday.
Monday My son's 6th birthday so as recovery day. Tuesday Back to BJJ 1 hour Ouchi gari drill and setup Ground work High mount collar attack to bring the hands up, then chest oustide over back of arm to open up for S mount, to arm bar. Rounds of sparring, great to get back to it. Wednesday BJJ 50 mins I went at lunch session, unfortunately work called so missed out on sparring. Drilled gift wrap from side control (2 variations) to sliding collar. Thursday Recovery Chest hasn't been great, booked in for the doctor's for another medication review, 3 weeks since the last change and it's but much better. Friday Running 2.7 miles 25 minutes 9'18" min/mi AVG 162 HR BPM AVG. Calisthenics Pushups 10, 14, 20 Squats 3x10 Lunges 3x16 Calf raises 3x20 Ab work, legs up to the air 10, 12, 18 Roll back 3x8 Bridge 3x 20s Stretching 10 minutes Back feeling much better since stretching it more regularly.
Saturday/Sunday Recovery days Monday Knowing that I would not be able to go to BJJ on Tuesday,I took the opportunity to get back into lifting. Squats, 20kgx10, 30x10, 40x10 Bench 20kgx10, 40kgx10, 50kgx10 Deadlift 60kgx5, 60kgx10, 80kgx10 Curl 20kg 2x10 Neck harness 5kg 2x10 Stretching 20 minutes Been to the doctor's again as asthma is still being a pain even after medication changes, new inhaler seems to make it worse; so going switching back to old medication and going for chest X ray. Tuesday Running with doggy 3.95 miles 39'48" 160bpm AVG HR I let the dog lead for 1 mile at whatever pace (as she's usually itching to go faster) 1 mile at 7'54" 5 minutes stretching. Wednesday BJJ 1 hour afternoon class. Sliding collar choke setup from back. Lots of good details to work on if I ever get to the back great sparring, got guillotined twice in a row I had to laugh, especially as I'd been watching guillotine video recently by the silver fox, but I felt so worn out, my brain was to slow to deal with it. Thursday I deliberately stopped taking my inhaler since Monday, only taking it once a day if peak flow dropped, but didn't need to, in fact my chest feels a lot clearer than it has been in a while. BJJ 1 hour Sliding collar choke, was good to work on this again. Followed up with a change to kimura grip then to arm bar. Had a new white belt to work with who was obviously nervous and was gripping as tight as possible in the drills and sparring, so now my arms look like I'm a leopard cross bread Sparring for extra rounds, felt ruined physically by the end, but mentally satisfied, especially as I did a slick guillotine escape to side control Friday Chest still feels very clear, still not using inhaler, I am keeping an eye on it as this may change as the drugs wear out of my system, I think the method of delivery causes irritation which has given me issues. So it may be a catch 22 X ray done, apparently I have very long lungs, whatever that means, so they had to take extra scans. Results come through next week.
