Does anyone here play an instrument?
I play the Highland Bagpipes, Bb Fife, Drums and Hunting Horn (Jagdhorn) myself. Just being curious :)

Oh, the bagpipe is a martial instrument, just like the fife. And bagpiping is quite good for your lungs, so somehow it can be seen as martial-arts related :p

Bass guitar because I sucked too much at regular guitar.

I played one each growing up. Starting with guitar and piano, moving to wind, then brass in middle and high school. I marched in drum corps with Tuba and played Upgright Bass and bassoon in orchestra. I only play cello, piano and guitar right now.

I play drums and piano. I'm quite a decent drummer. Awful at piano.

Maybe I should try Bass guitar then.... or actually try picking up my guitar for a change. I even picked up rocksmith with the intention of learning. Now my oldest daughter is plucking at it once in a while. Maybe she will adopt it.

Rocksmith is what got me playing bass and I'm glad I did. Might have done it since I sucked at electric but I'm really enjoying myself.

Mess around with guitars, basses, banjos (clawhammer style), ukes and harmonicas. Haven't practiced in a while due to a shoulder injury. Really need that sorted out. I really can't hold anything for more than 10 minutes with out my shoulder seizing up and being stiff as hell for days after.

Oh, I also bought a conga practice head so I could learn some block rockin' beats for capoeira. An atabaque is used in capoeira, but a conga is often used as a substitute.

When my shoulder is sorted out I am thinking of getting some drum lessons as Chuck Biscuits is my hero. Turn the sound down...and watch the awesomeness that is Chuck Biscuits.

    Needs more cow bell.

Silly question perhaps but I have no idea about drumming, how tightly do you hold your stick? It's all wrist action right?

Just wondering as I was watching people do blast beats and whatnot on YouTube and surprised at how loose they seemed to hold the stick. Or is it different depending on what you are trying to do?

He's playing the cowbell (clave) with his left foot!!!! A lot of the time anyway. It's freaking hard.

Mmh, it's kinda in the eye of the beholder and what you're playing at the time. Basically you've got strokes that use arm, fist or finger movement or a combination of them. If I'm rocking some Deep Purple I'm holding on tighter for instance. But never all that tight. You can always tighten at moment of impact if you're playing very hard.

Generally you want to be as loose as possible. The drums are really a whole body instrument. If you're tense you can't play well. Kinda like sports really.

I noticed. But still needs more. :p

Ok, thanks. It was these that got me wondering. Didn't know that the sticks would be held like that for playing so fast.

What are the practice drum kits like? We live in an apartment :p I've been thinking about buying one for a bit.

    Lol.

When you want to play fast you have to catch and use the rebound. So you use fingers and wrist in a sort of rolling and slightly twisting motion. Easier to understand by seeing it:

And here Steve Smith is just fooling around but you get the idea:

Honestly the basic motion isn't hard and you get decent speeds quite easily. It's using it in interesting ways that's hard.

    Can't forget the master:

About the practice drums... Never tried one :) My drums are at my parent's place and they have a massive yard. The volume's never been an issue. I'd expect them to be fine for practicing though.

I've heard the rebound on them just isn't the same, I can imagine that being true, so something I have to look into.

Not sure if I'd want to learn an instrument that I can't actually practice at home and just go for lessons once a week. Seems a bit silly.

Dunno how the dogs would take it too. One of them hates the guitar, played by anyone ...they do go nuts for the harmonica though. I guess they're blues fans.

If you can pick up a kit with mesh heads on the snare and toms the rebound is pretty similar to a real drum - not identical, but much better than hard rubber heads. Certainly good enough for a beginner like me, but when I have a large enough and remote enough house I hope to have an acoustic kit to play with instead.

    Mmh, maybe.

Honestly... I wouldn't :) The joy is in the playing after all.

I had a cat that loved to sleep in the bass drum, until I started playing once without knowing he was sleeping there.
