Anyone Had an Operation for a Herniated Disc?

I've been practicing karate for several years, while dealing periodically with serious lower back pain, due to a herniated disc.
For years I've been doing Pilates exercises and relied on rest and painkillers when my back went out.
However, with the recent birth of my son, the extra strain seems to have given me such a bad episode (I haven't been able to train in 3 months, even walking is painful) I'm contemplating an operation. Specifically the new Tessys method, which is minimally invasive and is done on local anesthesia, no overnight stay in the hospital.
Anyone had this, or any other surgeries for herniated discs?
    Successful or not so much?
Please tell me about it, and prospects for returning to martial arts.
