If you want to lift heavier and heavier, you'll have to tense up. Otherwise, you'll fail.
I just focus really hard and tune out everything. The only thing I see is the bar.

You don't exactly have to cool down. Just stretch after you're completely done.
You would just loop it through the holes in the plates, and then tie it up at the top.
You might want to try some pullovers, too. They don't exactly strengthen your core, but they'll help you a lot with dragon flags.
