      It was great thanks :D
Though I got lost for a good hour till I realized that my homeroom was on a different floor.
Another 20 minutes an I found the bloody class. After that, it went somewhat-maybe-possibly-okay.

      :D

      Thanks for concern.

Well hello there, Blade. How's things? Probably fairly cool up there in the Great White North. Here, we've finally gotten back down to double digit weather after nearly a month of 100+ degree Fahrenheit (37.7+Celsius), which is hot even for Houston in August. Therefore, self defense down here has recentlyconsisted of staying indoors during the afternoon. :)

      Oh! One more thing.

There are a number of groups that do play hard games and the like. There was one group in Argentina that had some really nice videos, but it would appear that they have taken them down now (que lastima!). While not at the same intensity, I thought I might post two videos of something somewhat similar at the end of this message.

As for my own grupo, we have a lot of new people now, so the focus is on basics. This has gotten me and several of the other senior students to talk about hard training outside of class, and I personally am looking for sparring partners outside of capoeira to work with. Both of these things will have to start in November, when I feel I have gotten the semester (I'm a grad student and TA) under control. I'm thinking of posting some video of these things when they begin so that MAP can have a laugh at me getting my rhymes-with-gas kicked.:)

      No problem, Blade!

True, capoeira has a number of flashy things in it--I certainly couldn't deny that! My point with the TKD guy was that it wasn't ALL flashy kicks--something I know that he said for effect, sure, but something I wanted to correct. Capoeira has Headbutts, elbows, loads of sweeps and takedowns in addition to the kicks, which include among them the roundhouse and front push kick common to most martial arts. That these movements only see a small bit of use in a lot of rodas is a problem, I think. But, being someone who has done my share of capoeira for the amount of time that I have, I definitely have my critiques of the system. All in all, though, I think that capoeira, well, capoeira angola has served me well. Furthermore, I appreciate your interest and your comments regarding capoeira--I know it isn't everyone's cup of tea. ;)

      Part two

Mestre does mean teacher but has come to mean in capoeira something akin to the way master is used in Asian arts--someone who has embodied the content of a system, is adept at it and seen to be fit to teach it. I guess it's like sensei--but I'm unclear as to the full definition of a sensei.

A batizado is a 'baptism' in capoeira regional/contemporanea where students are graduated to the next cord/level. The baptism is being dumped on the ground from a sweep by your teacher during the game. You then recieve your cord.

Good progress! How are you finding it? Made any interesting breakthroughs?

Capoeira angola does not have belts (nor does regional de Bimba, if memory serves). Capoeira contemporanea (created in the 60s) has a cord system similar to the belt system of Asian arts, but the colors/levels vary from one organization to the next. Many of the colors are quite pretty though. In angola, you are made a mestre when your mestre decides that you're ready.

Blade, I've been doing capoeira for 15 years, come November. Though there's always room for improvement, I'm definitely no noob in this art. :)

My experience is exclusively in capoeira angola, usually referenced (not entirely accurately) as 'the slow, traditional' capoeira. I've many acquaintances in capoeira regional/contemporanea but, though I have and continue to play contemporaneas, I've never trained in that form of capoeira.

I've also had an early interest in the history of the art, due to the group I've been a part of and the people I've met as a result. I, myself am a historian (BA, currently pursuing the PhD) and love finding out as much as I can about capoeira's sometimes convoluted history.

Thanks for asking. As I recall, you're a Shotokan practitioner, correct? (my apologies if I have the style of Karate wrong).

      Hi!

Not a popular style, it would seem - GKR. I know the club has a bad reputation (some of it deserved, some deserved in the past, and some undeserved) but I'm mostly happy with my instructor (he's a nidan) and it suits me for now.

Are you still training in Shotokan? My first instructor trained in Shotokan for years before he joined GKR. He says a fair chunk of GKR's syllabus is very similar to Shotokan, but oddly he prefers the Goju elements.
