Hello, I found this video, and was amazed that what Hatsumi described was something similar to the protection feeling I got from the instructor, no matter where you are, you feel he is by your side, like the distance is non existant. For materialistic people this will be absurd, but this is something great, and is like energy that moves you forward, at least in my case. I would love to hear your experiences about this. Thank you. https://www.youtube.com/embed/twzsCF7gi0o?version=3&start=342&end=509&autoplay=1
That was a creepy video. I really don't think that type of codependent relationship with a coach is a healthy thing.
It was no more creepy to me than the hyperbole in the BJJ film Chadderz posted the other day. In what way was Hatsumi describing a codependent relationship?
Fair. BJJ can be a very culty martial art too. Hatsumi isn't describing a codependent relationship (people rarely describe their relationships in those terms), but that kind of worshipful student-teacher relationship often is very codependent. Hatsumi could easily be describing love at first sight.
It's not a problem in and of itself, but there is a massive difference in Japanese societal customs and practices that makes this type of relationship somewhat difficult in a Western mindset. I am exceptionally close to my teacher and we have a genuine sense of family throughout the organisation so I fail to see why it that different with Hatsumi and Takamtasu. What does concern me is what happens when these relationships break down? At higher level of skill and ability it is pretty harsh, but at least you have something to walk away with....as a low level you are left high and dry and psychologically that can have a massive impact
I actually found it quite touching. I don't know what "wrapped in budo" means (I'm also allowing for limitations of translation), but he obviously has great affection for Takamatsu. I do find it a bit strange strange hearing someone talk like that about a friend, but I take that as my problem rather than Hatsumi's.
I would hate to think of having a relationship with my instructor or my students that went no further than "I pay you, you train me". If pure commercial transaction, like a martial art shop, were the only way I could learn, I don't think I'd bother. Not that I have any objection to others wanting that, mind.
You already know the answer. Very few, last year, the month of July, before the accident. I believe a total of 12, plus training alone, which I do frequently on my own, since my surgeon told me to stop training until I fully recover. So, as you already know, I am very confused, I have lack of understanding because I have no experience and I am going to devote myself to a very obscure cult called Budo. Come on, you don't believe in the cult, so why you bother? The question goes to people that practise Ninjutsu, or at least has respect of this "cult".
What accident is this? I spent well over a decade training in the Takamatsuden, training like that is in my bones and marrow, even if I don't train it activity now. I've never said I dont respect this art, only the majority of its members.
Well, sorry for you. I found very good people up to now, that are talented in different ways, from military ones to people devoted to the mystic and esoteric items of Ninjutsu (and these are the ones that I am most interested in). And you know, I wrote about this some time ago, is not a cool thing to remember, I wrote it only for the sake of contributing to the community, but I found that the lack of belief, and lack of spirituality is very common, and these topics require that a person could believe in his feelings more than in his mind.
I didn't train with bad people, Quite the opposite. Anyone who encourages you to not think, isn't a good teacher.
My disclaimer was that I hadn't watched it. I've watched about 25 minutes of it and switched it off. Boring and uninteresting. A very long infomercial about bjj.
Wow. How enlightning! Amazing! Continue yourself as you do! Great attitude, amazing logic, great mind!
Passive aggressive aside, come back when you realise that your beloved farts in bed and the honeymoon is over - it is hard to discuss rationally with puppy dog eyes
