What's up with the 80's action movie style neck breaks? The weird overly complicated double compression leg locks are terrible, and the attackers punches all fall far to short too.

I think I could take this guy. Don't think I could take Chadderz though. So I mean, that's saying something.

Im not saying he's fantastic but hes one of top men in WJJF and it shows a lot of techniques. Was just interested in peoples opinion on the video good or bad.

It's a whole bunch of "meh" tbh. Is there really nota cheap boxing club/Judo club near you?

He behaves without any pressure. He has practiced his techniques many times. Each against unresisting opponents, which is why they look the way they do. They're overly complicated and rely on his attacker immediately doing a flopper diver and losing all motor control after attacking. His striking leaves him open, he has no idea how to generate power, because he has only practiced his strikes on air. There's little economy of motion, and, on an aesthetic level, no elegance or beauty of technique. At best he is a budget stuntman, a poor imitation of Jackie Chan and the like that have preceded him.

Edit: What I meant to say was 'meh'.

There's Shotokan Karate near me , im a fit and flexible 52 but it would be very hard starting from scratch.
Have been doing wjjf for four years am a Purple belt but after reading a lot of stuff on here feel my grade is not worth much.

It was a prearranged demo vs two men in ninjer masks, the only thing shown by that is that the material shown wasn't structured well, and depended on a compliment partner to work

Honestly man, you're never starting from scratch. The good parts of training you will take with you, the bad you will shed behind. I did a very 'traditional' sort of schooling for a long while, it essentially looked like this. That might inform some of my venom towards it. Good people, but very impractical techniques. The only measure of where you are is how bad you could beat that dude who stopped training a year ago.

That one made me snort quite loud.

I was exactly the same. Came from a terrible TMA school to where I am now. I know guys that started at your age who keep up with me in a fist fight every time we train together.

    Good luck.

Regarding the guy in the clip.... His association (of which he is head) runs a "grappling " night. It's bjj-lite sparring. That said, the guy in clip never participates in the sparring from what I understand.

He also got in touch with a local Gracie Garage to ask them about working through the Gracie Combatives series as a basis for the grappling class.

Make of that of what you will.

Thanks man. It's so different when you watch proficient grapplers or strikers train at half speed. Once you've been doing resistant training for a while you learn to recognize what it looks like and what looks fake. :]

I post this video a lot, but to me it was the most paradigm shifting though I ever had with relation to martial arts:

I just watched as far as the beginning rei and got annoyed!!

Edit - Just watched the rest, looks like auditions to dancing with the stars to me, I actually really hate this kind of stuff, as people look at it and think of JJJ as being this. Some of the techniques resemble JJJ, some Aikido, some Karate, as that's what this is, a mix of different things, with no underlying philosophy or principles. In JJJ things are trained like this to learn the movement (Even then I'm being generous, it should NEVER be trained like this) these kid of people never progress beyond that and spend years training the same things as fighting techniques, that are only meant as learning tools!

It's like seeing an adult cruising around in a baby walker saying, "Hey, I've been walking since I could almost stand up"

I trained with the WJJF in secondary school. It was awful in terms of its combat functionality the sylabus was a joke - I didn't know at the time. I left around purple belt grading time, thinking I was Conde Koma and could spend all my money on drink and trying to get laid instead of training. Some years later I had the opportunity to roll with a WJJF 3rd Dan and back-took and choked him in about 30 secs of randori as a BJJ white belt. Purely anecdotal but that's my experience of the WJJF: jokers.

I think the WJJF will struggle in the future. Dubious origins and practices aren't great selling points in the Information Age and it's much harder to dupe the public. It's interest as a search term has declined massively according to Google. In large areas where other classes are available, it struggles with student retention in Northern Ireland. At least 2 of it's clubs in Belfast have closed in recent years.

Without proper sparing its like a man lying on grass doing the breast stroke and thinking he can swim.

It seems WJJF is a mix of Judo ,Karate and Aikido the problem is most technique's are poor. If the very best of those three Martial arts where incorporated into a syllabus you would expect it to be a very effective syllabus but this is not the case.

Again my thoughts and im open to be corrected I don't claim to be an expert.
Turning your back on an opponent to throw him in a half shoulder for example leaves you wide open for a massive strike to the kidneys or even a rear naked choke.
The right cross block with two hands leaves you open to eat a left hook or elbow.
Blocking and grabbing a hand or wrist works great in slow motion training but how well would that work on the street ? You would likely be grabbing fresh air.
I would say some of the WJJF syllabus would be effective on the street but a lot of it would be next to useless and if you tried to execute the technique you would be executed.
Robert Clarke is almost worshiped in the WJJF as can be seen in this recent picture at the WJJF congress in Northern Ireland.
