Which Weapon to Carry for Self Defence

I live in a rural area with lots of wildlife, including coyotes, wolves, bear, deer, moose, etc. I have never really worried much about carrying a weapon to deal with them. For the most part, they are more afraid of me and will not trouble me ... although I am hesitant about a bear or a moose, but really wouldn't be carrying anything that would be a threat to them caliber-wise/stopping power-wise.

I would be more likely to carry in an urban area... especially in an unfamiliar area after dark... than I would in a rural area. I see humans as much more of a threat than any animal.

    Thanks

Yeah thanks for your concern liberal. I'm very well. I exercise common sense more than believing in fairy tales. I'd rather be prepared than get caught off guard. Warzone? You might want to Youtube: BOMBSHELL: Inside Canada-USA "Refugee" Trafficking Ring. Sighs . . .

Wait, wait, wait -- that story (by "Rebel Media" -- I love the name) says that dangerous illegal aliens are crossing from the USA into Canada. Dangerous illegal aliens from the USA. From the USA. Hmm. Okay, color me extremely ignorant, but the only stories I have ever heard about people "flooding" into Canada from the USA are sick people searching for better medical care. :dunno: I don't know. Did I just totally miss the other stories? I'm really surprised by the accusation in this news story.

I will have you know geese and swans are the most dangerous animals of all! thats why i walk around with a 12gauge shotgun in my pocket at all times.

I have shot a shotgun and a .22LR rifle styled like a AR-15. i don't live in a city also and i am semi-surrounded by farmland and i have a terrible accent as proof if that means anything. :p

    [edit:]

What did you say about me? I will have you know i graduated top of class as a pest control agent. I have conducted hundreds of raids against pigeon cells and i have over 100 confirmed kills.

SWC Sifu Ben I am the law

You assume I'm liberal because I understand the law and judicial process and use my brain to actually plan my use of force around that? Jeez, you must think conservatives are brainless.

And yet in a few sentences you're going to use a Rebel Media piece full of lies and hyperbole to try to convince me you're somehow right to operate outside the law :bang:

So you'd rather break the law than simply make your planning sensible. Good luck with your future long-term incarceration then.

And there's the thing we mentioned in #2

Here is a print article with more details:
    https://www.nytimes.com/2017/03/07/nyregion/champlain-ny-canada-migrants.html?_r=0

I wouldn't use it as an example of dangerous immigrants/refugees. With Trump's election, there has been an increase in predominately Muslim immigrants heading to Canada and , as the video shows, Canada has been pretty relaxed about allowing them in and assisting them.

I live in this area, very close to the border crossing in the video. Violence from legal or illegal border crossers is extremely rare here. There has been much more violence in the area from the drug trade. However, it is a very safe area overall.

Nah,it's just that advising anyone against a firearm usage means you MUST be a leftist.

If someone says something you don't agree with that touches at all in the socio-political sphere it must mean they're in a certain "camp".

Y'know, like the white history professor who questioned the historical inaccuracies given by an Afrocentric lecturer-students later asked the professor why he was racist.

Just more examples showing what dunderheads people really are.

You are quite right about the awesome power of a firearm imparting a burden on those who choose to carry, but I consider that burden a reasonable price to pay.

I will add that I too prefer to go the route of de-escalation and avoidance (I have yet to be in a fight in my adult life), however, that actually factors into my reason for carrying. The way I see it, if I can't talk my way out of a situation and/or get away, said situation is probably serious enough that I would want the option of a firearm available to me. In addition, I've been handling them my entire life, so I am very, very comfortable with them.

With great power comes great reposonsibility....:)

    Always the best way

I would disagree wholeheartedly - that is essentially saying every non resolvable encounter needs lethal force....which isn't true by any measure. Granted there is always a possibility, but when your only tool is a hammer every problem looks like a nail.

Then there is the psychology of killing too - it isn't as simple or easy as many think (read "On Killing" as an example)

Given you are serving I doubt this is as much of an issue of course

This level of comfort is something people who don't handle guns a lot have a hard time wrapping their head around

You make a good point, and perhaps my meaning didn't come across correctly. I promise that, if somebody simply went to punch me, my first reaction would not be to immediately draw my CCW and shoot them... as said, I like the idea of having the option, but in that instance, drawing a weapon creates more problems than it solves, and a swift kick to the knee or groin would probably be better for everyone involved.

As said previously, I tend to be pretty good at avoiding bad situations, de-escalating, and even making friends out of potential adversaries, so that situation isn't so much what I'm thinking of. I'm thinking more of this strange new trend of angry people bringing a gun and lots of ammunition into a public place, like, say, a club or a movie theatre, and indiscriminantly firing. Or maybe the unpleasant discovery that you have a stalker (this happened to a family member of mine, SWAT had to be called in to save the day). The point being, if you really, really cannot avoid and/or de-escalate, that implies to me that someone truly intends harm, either to you as a person or to people in general. In that instance, my hands and feet are good, but my 9mm or .40 S&W is better.

And that is definitely the more complex skill set!

Most people can be taught to fight or shoot, learning to be charismatic is not so easy ;)

I keep saying it'll come back soon, but there is so much happening behind the scenes.

    How much?

Well how about many months of work, lots of money, many trips to Nottingham from Kent, two paid experts in addition to countless days (and nights) for Aunty Saz and input from all of the MOD Team and w haven't finished yet.

    So soon my pretties.

    Carry on.
