Even though a lot of people will tell you it isn't so - you can learn Martial Arts without a teacher.

However, you can't learn Martial Arts ALONE.

If you want to practice without a teacher, you are going to need a reliable partner. You are going to need 2 mouth pieces, 2 pairs of 16 oz boxing gloves, and at least one pair of boxing focus mitts. Buy some decent gear like ringside. Expect to spend $60-$80 on the gloves and $40-60 on the mitts.

Next get a good boxing manual. I have "Coaching olympic style boxing" by USA boxing and it's pretty good. There are probably loads available on the internets for free download. I'd check the pirate bay.

Start working on stuff from that book with your partner.

as much as i'd like to believe that, it isn't so.

the mere act of punching and the dynamics of punching are still form based, i.e. bad form, wrist break. bad impact angle, wrist break. power generation itself and the transfer of power from the ground to the throwing arm is in itself form based as well.

you need a teacher to correct you mistakes. someone who had had years of experience spotting good and bad form. separating what works from what doesn't. a sparring partner cannot correct you correctly.

it's like the story of two noobs who know nothing about bjj buying the fighternotebook and grab some mats and start "training". they got messed up pretty bad because they had no supervision.

Oh and P.S., there are martial arts schools in kolkata. I found them on Google.

It would be great if you could state it as fact, but there are plenty of great Martial Artists who got their start training alone or with a single partner, or with an inexperienced trainer.

Joe Calzhage got his start with his dad training him from boxing manuals.
Pat Militech started out learning Jiu Jutsu in his basement

As Martial Artists we are building sand castles, not stone ones. Just because this kid starts doing some padwork in his backyard with a friend doesn't mean he's going to stay there forever. Getting this kid to hit some pads is tantamount to giving a 5th grader an electronics kit.

You don't keep the electronics kit from the 5th grader just because he can't design single board computers. You have to start somewhere.

So don't listen to negative stuff too much. negativity is almost always bad. Go get some pads and learn some broken boxing. bust up your friends a couple times. If you like it, you'll be training somewhere real in a year's time.

Believe it or not, positive attitude is what it takes to be a great Martial Artist, and I can tell from your posts that you've got plenty of positive attitude. So never change. Always stay this excited and driven to learn about Martial Arts.

If you are driven enough to dilligently teach yourself Martial Arts from a website, you'll be driven enough to learn from a coach. Let's face it, I've been training for a decade and I have plenty of opportunities to learn. I'm not even driven enough to go to the gym and train any more.

So don't let anyone take away your excitement. This is your path. You walk it your way. Don't let anyone take it away from you. This is your journey, you make the choices.

there are quite a few great guros in fma that were able to accomplish great things with little instruction. when they launched their systems, the students had a hard time following what they taught because those guros had an inborn talent. they had a gift. unfortunately, not many are kinestheticaly gifted.

my bottom line: sure you could train alone. you may be one of the few that have the gift. but then again, know the risks. you could get monumentally screwed.

I just wanted to add that Rich Franklin learned BJJ from watching instructional videos before he had the opportunity to train legitimately.

    Evan Tanner was self-taught too

But I doubt that either Rich Franklin or Evan Tanner would claim to have mastered BJJ that way.

Nor was it in fact how they continued to train...but at least you can start!

    That's the question.

Sure. But the question was about mastering something alone. And I think either of those gentlemen would contend that they didn't master the material (if at all) until they started training with some serious grapplers. And even when they were starting out, they were probably practicing on someone, even if the unfortunate party wasn't a legitimate grappling trainer.

I suspect the original poster had much more romantic notions about training alone on a mountainside with the sun rising in the background and a second-rate group of musicians providing the score. ;)

i doubt rich franklin would be that good if he just trained alone. he may have gotten the ideas by watching vids but definitely he would have not gotten skills alone.

I actually ignored the "mastery" part of things in the original question because

    a) No-one masters an art anyway

    and b)....

....^THIS^ hit the nail on the head!

Which style can be mastered alone ?

Sorry, when I first read this, I thought of the style Bating.

    As in "Master Bating"

Which is what one does a lot alone

On a serious note, self taught, self trained, self assured, and mastery are different approaches when it comes to martial arts

You could probably learn kickboxing alone. But, see if there are any kapkido dojos in your area.
