I am pretty aggressive in sparring, even if this is not always the best approach. As I'll get more mature in my martial arts I'd expect to have better strategies and some more patience
I don't like to hurt people so when I fight I try not to his the face or middle of the chest. But if the fight becomes serious I would. I also like to try to avoid getting hit, so i guess I am a defender too. I actually developed a technique for us against people who only use fancy moves, so maybe i am more defencive.
im too innoecnt in my marital arts journey to know where i am in the position of an attacker or a defender. But from the 5 - 6 sparring matches ive had... most of the time i just go into attack and try to kill the guy... which is bad... i have yet to try a fully defnesive fight. Tomrow, which is my next martial arts class... i will see what it feels like to be a defender... see how i feel in that... when that is done i will come back to this thread and say which i prefer, but also which i feel worked best. I feel defense is one of my weakenesses, and if not that, its one of those areas i havnt been concentrating on. Anyways yeah.
Defender... Reason to vote for that is that I would do anything to avoid a fight... But if it comes to that point, as I said so many times, I would try to get that first punch or move...
Depends Sparring - I tend to defend unless they're not attacking either, then I'll attack. And I have terrible reaction time so blocking is usually a fail. I don't like sparring ... Grappling - Attacker, almost always. I like grappling :hat:
I generally don't believe in attacking and most of the time goes by defending. However, it differs from situation to situation. In a street fight, I am a defender and in a tournament, I'm an attacker.
Stand up- i fight on the offence, prefer using punching more however unless they are keeping there distance, i can fight defensive i have been told i'm good with my reflex's...i dont mind fighting in clinch too ground- Defensive my strenth is not grapples on ground level...i know how to ground fight but i fight naturally better stand up, however during training because it is my weaker point i train extra in my ground work
Epee--naturally an attacker, and I don't shy away from in-fighting. Saber--naturally defensive. Which doesn't really work so well in saber. Thus, I suck at saber.
I have a natural healthy amount of aggression so definitely an attacker prefering close in tactics. Will adjust and counter if required if plan A goes to ruin. From experience sparring will sometimes play defensive for fun and to keep sharp, SD always pushing forward close range striking hooks, headbutts and elbows and last two situations (last one over 2 years ago now) slamming them into walls/shop windows was effective and instinctive. Train hard, fight easy, try to be a nice guy in the meantime. Cheers Dan93 Cognito Ergo Sum !
Stand up I'd be more defensive and conservative, using jabs and kicks to keep range until I find an opening for a takedown. On the ground I'm pretty aggressive, normally because that's where I want them. Currently doing Kickboxing to work more on my standup and to get a bit more confidence in striking.
I intercept a lot on the feet. Lots of takedown counters, lots of matched jabs, lots of chopping up advances with inside leg kicks. Basically I throw artillery with head kicks and teeps, encourage them to enter and try to slip and intercept whatever they present and try to crash to the clinch from that. On the ground I'm a lot more of an attacker but pretty much everything comes from hurting them until they achieve the scramble and then taking the limb they give me. Lots of heavy side-ride and knee on belly, axe chokes, necklocks, elbow digs and kneebars. On the bottom I like running legs from guard with knee kimura sweeps, butterfly sweeps and ankle locks.
Full contact (amateur rules) - I'm primarily a striker so i like to deal out the thigh kicks and flick out punches. I tend to wait til the other guy tries to take it to the floor and then try and avoid/ride him to the floor then lock or choke - sounds a bit odd but it works,,,,about half the time. Point - I'm quick with a long reach so I tend to base my game around those strengths. real - thankfully not had many opportunities to try this - the once or twice i have i tend to get in close enought to use knees, elbows and trips,, and once a headbutt. Anything to finish it quick so I can move away.
I'm a defensive fighter in the beginning and I start attacking more as I get more comfortable with the person I am facing.
Q. What kind of a fighter are you? A. Not a particularly good one (as yet!). I'm only a beginner although I can see a big improvement from when I first started training 9 months ago. In BJJ I'm gradually spending slightly less time on my back! I'm 5'2'', 50 kilo and the lightest in our club, so I spend a fair bit of time getting sat on! I don't do much stand-up although I've done some light-contact sparring once or twice in MMA and sports jiu jitsu classes. If I was being nice to myself, I'd describe my style as sort of 'guerilla' - a quick attack and then retreat. If I was being honest, I'd confess that it's mostly retreat! lol
It depends on who I'm fighting. If I'm more skilled than my opponent, I usually use counter attacks. Otherwise, I'm generally offensive, but it's good to mix it up.
I'm in agreement with Moe, here. Avoiding a fight by any means is usually the best approach. No need for excess violence, after all. Only fight if you really need to.
