Just for the people in the crowd who are hard of thinking (i.e. ME) who are having trouble following this thread...is that your school/style Greg?

Theodorou isn't my school. My instructor studied under Nick, however. Phil is separate. Now I'll say this; they're both great businessmen and cater to more than just the strict JJ crowd. Kids programs, fitness stuff etc. Now you can use the easy shortcut and choose to use that to make an argument against the legitimacy/ability of the style/instructor/school etc, or you can be more pondered about it.

How is something advertised as "American" made Japanese through marketing? Makes zero sense.

That is the issue I was pointing at.

If someone teaches a "Japanese" Jujutsu that has...expletive deleted...connection to anything Japanese...why do you call it Japanese?

The website http://bostonselfdefense.com/about_us.php says this gentleman

"in 1985, Sensei Theodorou began training in American Jiu Jitsu (Hakko Ryu) directly under O’Sensei Joe Puleio"

I found this interesting, the American Jiujitsu Centers website http://www.americanjiujitsucenters.com/black_belts.html says that Mr. Puleio "received Godan rank 5th degree Black Belt directly under Grand Master Shoto Tanemura in Kokusai Jiu Jitsu"

Does that mean he has a 5th dan in Kokusai Jujutsu Renmei (KJJR) from Tanemura sensei?

Unless I'm missing something, according to the Genbukan site http://www.genbukan.org/cgi-bin/site.pl?aboveRenshi , the highest level instructors appear to be ranked 7th dan in KJJR and the kyoshi instructors appear to be 5th or 6th dan.

Has any of the Genbukan folks trained with this gentleman and can they verify if he received a 5th dan in Kokusai Jujutsu Renmei (KJJR) from Tanemura sensei?

Look at my last post. The gentleman's teacher's teacher (if that makes sense) claims a godan from Tanemura sensei in KJJR.

IF that is really true then maybe they do have a Japanese claim.

Also keep in mind Mr. Puleio apparently founded American Jiu Jitsu Centers in 1984 and Tanemura sensei established his KJJR in 1991.

    It sure does.

I did not see that claim.

Let's see if it can be substantiated!

    Timetravel is theoretically possible apparently.

I'm sure the Genbukan crew can shed light.... :)

Your question would have made total sense to me if you had asked

"If someone teaches a "Japanese" Jujutsu that has a connection to anything Japanese...why don't you call it Japanese?

As is, I don't get it.

I can't answer all those questions tbh, but if some people have a way to verify or invalidate the claims, I'll be the first one interested. Regarding the discrepancy in chronology, keep in mind that mini bios are updated after the fact, so it is possible that the creation of the AJJ predates him attaining Godan rank in KJJR without being anything shady about the claim. Following this attentively...

Also, I did find a mention of a godan rank in HRJJ

Greg I'm reserving judgment until I hear back on this. I'm not necessarily saying he doesn't have this rank but it does sound odd. It may turn out to be an "honorary" title; however the wording "Kokusai Jiu Jitsu" was strange.

Also that's just it. If the creation of the AJJ predates his attaining the 5th dan which is highly likely since the website says it was in 1984 then it is more than a little misleading to use this as validation of teaching jujutsu especially since it wasn't taught under its current structure until 1991.

But let's wait and see if we can get verification

Also I'm not questioning his godan in Hakko-Ryu Jiu-Jitsu....well yet
