Great Tom! Perfect! The best way to win a fight is to walk away from it. Kudos!

The sparrow doesn't land where the tiger roams. A more philisophical approach to the don't get into a fight.

Some thoughts from my experience and view point.

The matter of legality in combat is a tricky one, a balance between two extreme's.

    1. DON'T TOUCH HIM, HE MIGHT HAVE LAWYERS!!!
    2. SMASH KILL DESTROY!!

Ultimatly the immediate soloution comes from being violent enough to defeat the threat, while maintaining an up right image in the eye's of bystanders and therefore the law.

The problem being them more you try to become lawful the harder it is to defend; lets face it going balls out attack on someone with your most vicious arsenal of techniques is a good way to tip the odds in your favor.

My personal view is take care of the attack let do everything to incapacitate your attacker. Before hand, verbally dissuade him and use body laungauge to communicate a disinterest in fighting. But I would not rule out a pre-emptive strike.
    *Attack has been dealt with*

If the injuries look serious e.g. knock-out, severe bleeding help them, if that is impossible at least try and delegate responsibility to a bystander (show that you care) for example ask them to phone for an ambulance.

If the injury doesn't look bad, or he has friends that will take care of him/chase you, then run.

Either way if you do want to look after your attacker, (I can't say I would do so if I didn't know the person) get it done and get out of their. Look sharp basically, you may not be out of the woods yet. You think a soldier who shoots another guy who's been shooting at him assumes he has one the firefight?

Get out of there, report in at a police station. But it's my personal prefrence not to do this, I think the legalities are just to complex and it's better to stay out of the paperwork. I'm not sure about other places but in inner cities if you make a quick exit and keep yourself low profile for the day or so, your chances of being "called out" are pretty low.

Face it alot of fights break out in the world and the police generally don't trace up the other guy if their are few leads and nothing spectacular happened, example manslaughter etc.

I have had 4 experience with violence, and I've learnt from them all, thankfully nowadays I'm not half the idiot I used to be, I thought I'd share them.

    1. Got into a fight with a large group of neds (we're looking at 15-20 plus) when visiting a girl during her lunch break in the school yard, I later found out it was suppose to be a joke, the guy who had planned it (I knew him) didn't expect me to launch a pre-emptive strike and the neds took the pre-emptive strike as a cue to start some real violence.

Simply put after fighting my way from the centre of the group I fled with a cut on my face from a ring, a number of bruises and a tear on my t shirt. Although the school apparently knew my name somehow, the "police investigation" never happened.

And yes I know that story sounds very braggy, so if you want to ignore it on those grounds I don't blame you.

    2. I was approached by three asking for my phone, again pre-emptive strike. I fully incapacitating one (he was on the floor and failing to get up) and semi the other (doubled over cluching his face from an elbow strike/ possibly hook and his ribs, probably from a knee or roundhouse of some sort), my memory of the event is hazy thanks to adrenaline.

I was hit on the back of the head the in the jaw, (both strikes only half hitting due to his god awful accuracy) then cut my loses and ran, my persuer gave up after about 20 seconds chase. I suffered a level of injuries similar to the inciddent above I didn't report the inciddent, I made a quick call to a friend who I knew was nearby and we met up to "escort" me home, no legal rammifications.

    3. Got Jumped at a party, triped and fell, broken bottle on the patio injured my arm my friends got the guy off me after I wrapped him in my gaurd and struck some weak blows at him (being on my back it was hard for me to get any force in). I went to A+E afterwards; police got a statement off of me and nothing happened.

Found out the guy who went for me was doing it as an "Initiation" to his gang.

Would anyone be able to tell me if I should of gotten a letter, my assumption is that it was a pure SD situation and the police team decided not to chase it up.

    4. Walking home from jamming with a friend (rough area of town), approached by a kid about two years younger than me he held out a knife asked for money, I grabbed the knife and head butted him, I accidently drew the knife into my hip as I did so, luckily I was in the housing estate right next to the hospital and the blade hadn't gone in very far, so I got the hospital, gave statement, no word back on that either.

Conculsions I have come to are that the youths in britian are afraid of being labelled as "grasses" so your main worry of being reported is others seeing what happened, most people who aspire to "gangsterdom" are highly ulikely to report being physically attacked, let alone when it was a SD case.

Avoid Avoid Avoid! Don't go to tough places and avoid trouble.
Be friendly, better to make friends than enemies.
The same above but applied when dealing with the police can help you greatly.
However this may not be the case elsewhere in the world, and their are undoubtadly different situations to the ones I have been in so I can't generalise.

I can't help but point out you're supposed to mess up the other guy. Not stab yourself

No retreating neccesary anymore in lots of free states (the red ones mainly) like ours. Castle doctrine was passed here, and many other states. Stand your ground and put a world o hurt on him, he made the choice to assault you.

What about if the attacker is drastically bigger than you?

I'm a 5'7 and 50kg female. Like force may not be an option. If some 90kg brute attacks me, I'm using my lock knife.

Any wonder I never go out at night any more.

I thought you can carry a blade if it's less than 3in long?

    My lock knife is 1.5...

Anyways, I use it for all sorts of innocent tasks. Cleaning my nails, opening packages, etc.
