Chris Kent's "Jeet Kune Do: A to Z, Vols 1 and 2," coupled with his "Dynamic Jeet Kune Do" DVDS are must have for anyone seeking pure Jun Fan stuff(differs greatly from Balicki's and other's "Jun Fan," for example). Kent's has that "some sort of Western-Fencing thing," "develop the heck out of a few critical tools" obvious in Lee's own sparring demos, for example. Kent does do the Kali thing as well, but in the above it's pure Jun fan.
I have to say, I couldn't possibly agree with you more. It comforts me to know not everyone is caught up in the past.
I'm going to be the first to say - I don't think there are any VITAL books in the JKD library. I've never read a single JKD book. Not even the Dao, and yet I train in JKD and doubt I'm getting any less out of it than people who have read all 50 "vital" books in the JKD library.
i don't think reading anything is necessary. you eventually find things out on your own. (maybe not) However, if someone else has already taken the long route to an answer, i like to get their take on it, and maybe get there sooner. plus i just like to watch, compete, practice, read about, and write about martial arts. did i mention eat, breathe, and poop it also?
I think you meat the Tao Yohan, and i agree, but reading the books has definately helped me. I'd learn something from a lesson and then go over it at night by reading the technique in a book.

You mention reading unnecessary, then go on to say you like to read about things...
Hi Guys, I would recommend Sifu Dave Carnell's new book called'Jeet Kune Do: A Core Structure Training Manual'. In my opinion it is one of the best books on JKD, also other great books to consider buying are by Tackett & Chris Kent.
a bit of a delayed response, sorry for missing your post before. it's not a contradiction. I believe with enough work, and the ability to be honest with oneself, any martial truth can be discovered on your own. More importantly it will be your truth and not someone else's. I believe reading is a kind of like hitch hiking. Once and a while you stick out your thumb and let someone take you with them, but eventually you must continue the journey on your own.
Buce Lee historian, Paul Bax's, "Disciples of The Dragon" is a great collection of interviews with orginal Bruce Lee students, many of them students few have hardly ever heard of, as they have kept out of the limelight. Rare accounts of Lee's exploits, abilities, training methods, etc. Also, his "Descendant's of The Dragon," a followup collection of interviews but with 2nd Generation JKD instructors.
Tim Tackett's new JKD App for the iPhone and iPad is a must for any serious JKD'er. Great material, lots of training video's and for a fraction of what a book or DVD would cost. I like Tim he just gets right to the point and does not spend any time waffling.
Agreed, Tim's app is a great overview and guide to ChinatownJKD. I bought it first day out. If you are drawn to concepts side of the fence a certain Patrick O'Malley has an excellent FMA app too.......

Really? I was very excited about this book until I actually read it. I felt the author could have put so much more into it and he did quite a shallow job given the subject matter. It was very disappointing.
