Since the industrial revolution socialist policy has been at the heart of every major economic power. To say it has "failed" is to ignore the evidence right in front of your eyes.

You could say that Communism failed, but the two are not synonymous, no matter what myopic right wing blog writers might have you believe.

Oh, and by the way, Marxism didn't fail, and Communism and Marxism are not synonymous either. Marxism is a form of socioeconomic analysis, not a political system, and the more time goes on, the more Marx and Engel's predictions appear correct. Have you read the news lately? Some of the most successful billionaires on the planet are saying that automation will kill labour, and the only solution will be a universal income that is not tied to productivity. If you gave their writings a chance, I think you'd see a lot of parallels with the current concerns of Trump voters: alienation, automation, global markets, all leading to the inevitable demise of capitalism.

 

I think it's also important to distinguish between a fully socialist nation in which the means of industry are fully controlled by the government, and one in which certain economic sectors are either heavily regulated or under control of the government. We have no problem saying that national defense, infrastructure, k-12 education, etc. should be within the purview of the government and there have certainly been states that have not nationalized those industries. Acting as if the world will end because we have decided to collectively provide people with healthcare or an education that qualifies them for a job besides the fast food industry, well, that strikes me as overblown hysteria.
