With Trump you're often left wondering if it's incompetence or malevolence, and the truth is that the distinction doesn't really matter.

Likewise, I think it's unrealistic to think that the target of anti-immigration sentiment or political efforts are those overstaying their visas. Those seem directed primarily against people from Latin America and the Middle East, or appearing as if they are.

Narcsarge, I started reading this, which is where I think you got the 40% figure, but quickly found myself moving down the rabbit hole of enforcement.

So uhh... who's collecting that data, how is it being stored, and who's got access to it? This would be a relatively easy way to keep track of everyone's comings and goings in airports. I'm feeling a little bit paranoid these days with the Equifax hack and the emergence of a new algorithm that can tell whether people are gay from facial recognition with 81% accuracy.

The tools of oppression seem more benign these days, and also more opaque, somehow more distant from day to day life. Would it be censorship if a company decides that an anti-establishment screed should get less views than one extolling the virtues of society? What does it mean when the modes of public discourse are increasingly controlled by commercial entities? We've seen how these can be misused by bad actors in the most recent election, but I'm concerned also about when they're functioning properly.

I was trying to do a little thought experiment about how society would change if we could tow an asteroid into Near Earth Orbit, and whether there would be much difference if it was conducted by the US government or by Facebook-Amazon.

 

Who's collecting the data? Pick one: NSA (all the wonderful cellphone taps of citizens, members of congress, the press, and (to keep it about the thread topic) Trump. More people in the last year of the previous administration had access to information that used to require high level security clearance. ie; a United Nations ambassador asking for names from classified emails. Shall we try Google? They worked hand in hand with the white house to upgrade the systems for Congress and the President. They are also the largest monopoly in the world and can set content/information if they so choose.

I can not speak to astrological hypothetical situations but anyone that trusts their government, given what we already know about ours, is off their rocker.

 

I think that's a relatively short list that could be expanded by a great number of people.

Hey, at least you know where to protest and who to vote out of office.

 

There's plenty down here in the south. They work for minimum wage and send money to their families in Mexico.

Really though, there doesn't have to be a right and a wrong answer. In politics there will rarely, if ever, be that choice. Just bad and worse. Giant douche and turd sandwich.

I do prefer the Democrats, and they are less racist than the Republicans because they need black and Hispanic votes, but both Bill and Hillary have been caught up in some shady racist stuff during their careers.

It's still choosing two different shades of evil though, at the end of the day. No fresh face in the Oval Office is going to change that, we're too far down the rabbit hole.

IS the presdient even that much worth anything? Would voting for a third party even change anythign apart from stopping the two big dogs from getting it? Unless i am butchering U.S poltiics, i could be butchering U.S politics.
