And now I have a perfect picture in my head of what happens, and a good idea of the contortion your face made on collision. I use a thin wire rope for my rope skipping to focus on speed. Downside is you better not mess up because getting struck by that thing will leave a welt like no other.
I have a question. Probably a silly one. Is skipping a good or a bad thing to do if you have knee/ ankle pain issues? I have those and I don't know if skipping would help build up my knee and ankle strength, or would tear them down. I don't have any tears or anything. Doctors have never been able to tell me exactly what is up, but my Eastern style massage therapist thinks it is fascia issues.
Skipping can be really hard on the ankles and skipping on concrete should be avoided. If it's the only option I suggest a bit or carpet or rubber matting. The thing that I'm trying to get across during the skipping classes at work is a really relaxed style and a jump of no more than a few inches. This is what will help keep the injuries at bay, in addition to allowing you to skip for longer. I suggest following watching the first video and just try to replicate the jump, but without the rope. Any pain at all then stop.
It's worth searching you tube for some ankle strengthening and mobility exercises. Knees however are not my area and will need someone with a lot more expertise in that area.
I'm ok with skipping. I can do crossovers and double jumps. I cannot however, use short/speed ropes, I know it shouldn't really make a difference but I always end up catching the rope with my head or something. When I get tired my technique suffers and I start dropping my hands and therefore catching the rope. I agree with Simon that when you start out, big girly jumps, get your rythm going first. My record is still about 4mins non stop before I end up tripping and thats at a slow pace too Usually I do 5x 2min rounds...last 10sec I go into a "sprint"
A quick question. When you jump up, do you straighten your legs? Or do you keep your knees slightly bent at all times?
If you keep bent legs you can place more emphasis on the quads, as shown in this video. In tha basic girly jump the legs are fairly straight, but relaxed. It isn't a conscious effort to straighten the legs. I've decided against buying this rope due to poor user reviews, so I've gone for one of [ame="http://www.amazon.co.uk/Big-Bargain-Skipping-Boxing-Crossfit/dp/B00AAYKFJ2/ref=sr_1_1?s=sports&ie=UTF8&qid=1385324815&sr=1-1&keywords=crossfit+speed+rope"]these.[/ame] Really cheap, but I want to test the design/swivel joints of this rope and how it acts compared to a standard design. I've gone for a wire rope this time and it'll be interesting just how much faster it'll be. I'm hope that it's flexible enough to twist when doing crossovers. I hope to film the next clip on Sunday 1st.
To the bolded: A lot faster, and yes. I would give it a good round or two of skipping before you start tricking with a wire rope with that kind of swivel (it's the exact kind I use, but my swivel is metal with a bearing). You can really whip yourself good if you make a mistake skipping with a wire. Source: Having whipped myself with a multiple selection of ropes from licorice or cotton, to wire. Wire is by far the worst. I hope I can start skipping soon myself to add to this thread. I bought 6 new wires for my rope (handles are permanent, wire gets changed due to kinks from use/storage) and then I got knocked out. The jumping bit is too much for me at the moment.
Simon, did you get the rope? Have time to test it out yet? I like the fact that it has an adjustable nut ( or seems so from the picture ) - getting the rope consistently to the right length is a must for myself.
A bit of insomnia fueled by Thanksgiving acid reflux had me watching Simon's skipping vids. So inspired I went down to our basement to fetch me a rope and do some of my own...couldn't find one of our skip ropes...then there in a corner was a little plastic box...stuffed with all our jump ropes - the little plastic ones the kids started on...the impossibly long cotton number I first picked up and my steel-wire and the Skilz weighted number I'd picked up not too long ago...all twisted and mangled together - it'll be forever before I can stretch them out again and some of um will never return to their original length What madness would drive someone to do this?? Then I remember...the wife's been complaining about the skip-ropes hanging from every object in the house over 2 metres high :bang: So here's a pose of the remaining few of Belltoller's skip-ropes. One in particular - the weighted Skilz number, I opened up for a look. Not badly made - you can see the high tension spring and cold-rolled steel weight. Threads in the handles are crisp and looks like it might've held tight for a bit. One would think with all the ropes I'd be able to skip one of them...
I got the rope two days ago and have only had a few minutes with it. I'll be using it today in the lunvchtime skipping class I teach, but won't post a review probably until next week. I will hopefully be shooting another video on Sunday where I'll be showing you ow to skip inside and outside of the rope. I now have people in the skipping class, including middle aged men who site behind a desk all day, skipping over 200 turns of the rope without a break. If they can do it...
The person I describe above has just done 397 uninterupted turns of the rope. When he started 5 0r 6 weeks ago he could do 5. Edit. And he beat me because I did 347.
I used to skip rope a lot but have lost my mojo. I have been working on it for a few months but i am certainlynot as good as some folks. I have trouble with the girly jumps. I always fall backto the Right Right, LeftLeft rhythm.
As promised I shot another video this morning. This one is on how to skip inside and outside of the rope. [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6i-KcCI3AKA"]Skipping inside & outside of the rope - YouTube[/ame]
This video is just a bit of fun at the end of the video shoot. I fully expect you as martial artists to be able to do this, especially those of you who use weapons. The Wu Shu guys/girls who use the steel rope should be able to do this easily.
