pic of my brother and me with sensei Yasunori Yonamine, 9th dan Goju-ryu Meibukan, at a seminar he held in august last year in São Paulo. I have very nice memories of that seminar, and sensei Yonamine was awesome, he is a very nice person, very humble and very humorous too, and his training is excellent. fortunately for us he only chose two or three yudansha to serve as uke, but man did he give them hell [paraphrasing a lot from what i remember] *sensei removes his gi top, has a white muscle shirt underneath, and he looks as if made of pure muscle fiber* *he explains that with lat tension your whole torso hardens, and proceeds to show us how lowering his shoulders his traps rise about 10 centimeters *he gets one of the bigger yudansha to be his uke, makes him remove his gi top, and starts showing us how one should tense the body, in a way reminiscent of sanchin shime* *once he is satisfied with his posture, he makes him tense his lats as hard as he can* *BOOM!. ura tsuki to the chest. at this point there was visible pain emanating from all those watching.* *thump. thump. thump. "gostoso, ñão é?(you like it, don't you?)""-UNGH- oss, sensei....". general laughter* *after a while of explaining stuff, and with his uke thoroughly battered, he proceeds to show a couple of techniques, and motions as if he was going to punch the uke in the face. upon seeing the look on his face we all started laughing again, and sensei just went and hugged the guy* another one was when he had pulled up his pant leg to show some details about the front leg in stances, and the next day he had a cold and jokingly scolded us because he got a cold while showing his pretty legs to us. just goes to show that karate masters are human too, and very nice ones at that
Anyone remember the film Sanjuro by Akira Kurosawa? At the end of the film there is a duel between Mifune and Nakadai. After an excruciating phsychological standoff that lasts about a full minute of motionless "conflict" there is a burst of action involving one cut each. Perhaps the most dynamic moment in any chanbara movie. That was what it was like to see Enoida shihan and Kanazawa shihan perform ippon kumite. Ichi Gan means "first the eyes" Absolute observation and instant explosive action.Every atom of concentration and power in a single action. Seeing these two masters perform inspired many of the greats of shotokan karate. regards koyo Hey Fish Notice the triangular entry and the angular disengagement used by Kanazawa shihan in you first video?
OK so I double posted. But I found this picture and thought you might like it. The two tigers of shotokan.
Allow me to refer you to the ultimate reason why a cat gotta be crazy to fool with sensei Enoeda: http://www.martialartsplanet.com/forums/showthread.php?t=61448

Brilliant find, somehow missed that one up until now. Off to watch it for the third time. Cheers Gary.

Oooo...I think I'm liking this thread... First we have Katsuya Miyahira (10th dan Shorin Ryu). Second pic we have (left to right) Dan Simmons (now 7th dan Shorin Ryu), Takeshi Miyagi (10th dan Shorin Ryu), and Jim Lilley (8th dan Shorin Ryu). I'll post more when I can. I think I have some video links for Miyahira, and I also have video (someone) of Miyagi.

Don't get much older and mastery-er than this. Mr G. Funakoshi looking rather elderly and rickety but still karateing. [ame]http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=m6Rj4B4Mc5Q&feature=related[/ame]

I saw kanazawa tell a BIG powerful karateka to stand in zen kutsu dachi (forward stance) and hold a cross block as powerfully as he could. Kanazawa then kicked right through it onto the fellows stomach muscles and knocked him flying backwards, Kanazawa could strike straight through your block no matter how strong it was!!!!! regards koyo
