So I will say upfront that the occasional naughty word creeps into my discourse here, but considering how irate the video in question made me that is not surprising - rather than go on a lengthy text rant I thought a side by side would be useful The original video - please don't puke on your keyboards whilst watching My riposte
What is interesting is that Marie Claire have actually been removing a lot of negative comments about it....what does THAT tell you?
Fantastic appraisal and countering of the original video. I hate these kind of 'empowerment' videos, for the very reasons you stated yourself.
Thanks for the video Hannibal - Yours obviously, not the 'other' - I will send you a bill for de-vomiting my keyboard... "The video was dangerous, it's a poor message. Self defense isn't a game, it's not easy..." You obviously went on to say more in the final minute of the video, but this point here is at the very heart of many of the debates (arguements) that I have had with so called SD instructors over the years, and why for my money, such instructors are, and should be held in contemp by their peers (betters?) Travess
Great video. But I do recall that you said on FB that you would be posting another video saying what would be good techniques in the situations the original video. When are you going to make that? I love the video you did Hannibal. But instead of just pointing out what is wrong, I really would like to see a video of a more positive note as well.
Seems to be the done thing - I had exactly the same thing happen to me yesterday, when Mr. Matt Fiddes chose to remove my comments from his FB page, along with several others I might add. (Full disclosure though, I did not refrain from swearing, and my comments were more 'ad hominam' based than they were directed at his post.) Travess
That's going to be in part 2....as in the responses that won't get you smashed There is literally nothing positive to say about the first video other than "she is physically fit", which is absolutely irrelevant to the content
Hmm...can't find edit button...nevermind! Part 2 was planned for last week but timing went squirrelly....hoping to get that done this week
I showed my wife who has very little MA experience and she echoed your thoughts Hannibal. We also liked your rebuttal video.
Honestly, I'm extremely skeptical that any of these sorts of 'three techniques your wife needs to know!' videos, even those coming out of unquestionably skilled martial artists like the Gracies. They seem more aimed at advertising and instilling confidence than self defense, and the utility of 'hey here's one type of choke' pales in comparison to basic training for six months.
Correction, i learnt better SD in one TKD self defence class and from a free copy of one of the Defendu books.
I like the follow up video. The original I couldn't finish watching, as my eyes were bleeding. I don't understand what they are trying to achieve in the published video; Easily applicable defence drills? No. Money from people buying a DVD or book related? Nope, didn't see one related. Promotion for something else? I couldn't work out what that would be? Maybe buy the magazine/paper Credit for their techniques and execution? Well the attacker seems to jump away at the correct moment, so maybe they have chi power??
Showed my little sister (who has no MA background) the first video and she laughed a lot! Really enjoyed your breakdown. Have you seen much of the cross fit self defence stuff? 'Cross fit has made you stronger...faster' 'be prepared for the unknown and the un-noble' (Which sounds like a description of their teaching) I think the only thing I like is that they clearly think physical fitness plays a part!
You got to be joking. Crossfit SD? What are you going to do? WOD them to death?! There are actual memes against this. "Just cos you can lift, doesn't mean you can fight". Sure fitness plays a part. But saying "strike just like a push/pull motion..." wow.
*sarcastic post* WHAT?! Are you trying to tell me I can't bench press my way out of bottom in full mount, or from being RNC'd?! *actual post* it's HORRIBLE isn't it!! I'm not sure the scorn came off well enough in my post. Don't get me wrong, I spend way more time lifting weights than training, and I know that the me that was competing a year ago would wipe the floor with current me, despite the strength/weight difference. But if I had had my current physical attributes on top, I think it would have made me a better fighter. I got invited to a self defence thing locally, after meeting the instructors at my gym today, they had a krav/MMA background, and some of it seemed interesting, massive emphasis on keeping the head covered, but they were definitely trying to sell a product. I'll do a thread if I try it out.
Sounds like defense lab (a keysi spin off) they're running weekend courses for new instructors in the uk, so I imagine the quality is directly related to that.....
