Sorry, I wasn't really sure which forum I should put it in! So after hearing about my terrible ankles all my injuries the head instructor has recommended that I get a pair of shoes for training. Of course I won't be sparring in them but more for just general practice, bouncing etc. Does anyone have any recommendations? I need to be able to get my orthotics into them as well.

I use Lonsdale trainers, cheap, comfortable and practical.

I wear a pair of wrestling shoes when I practice.. Gives ankle support if you get the style that goes over the ankle.. Otomix also had shoes that were good for practicing also.. The wrestling shoes were good for sparring if you wore the over the instep leg protector/shin guard..

Second the wrestling shoes that cover the ankle. That is what I use when I practice my CLF and TCC. Can't imagine it would be different for karate.

I find the annoying thing about orthotics is you really need to test them out in the shoe store to make sure they fit. Haven't ever had any store workers object. I don't buy shoes online because of this. Unless I am buying the exact same pair of something I have already worn before.

Wrestling shoes if you need ankle support, TKD shoes if you don't.

If you need to get orthotics in and you're not sparring in them Feiyues are cheap and will allow you to get the orthotics in. I have wide feet and can't even get TKD shoes on, never mind get orthotics in them.
As said wrestling or boxing boots if you need extra ankle support.

Wrestling shoes. I wore them, and slipped my foot pads over top for sparring.

I tried on some Nike Free TR 6 PRTs and they were nice. Expensive though. Silly question, but where would I get wrestling shoes from?

Anyplace that sells sporting goods and has a shoe area. Running, basketball, etc. The wrestling shoes are not usually in the most visible area in places like these, but they are there.

That's a very American -centric answer. Pretty much no regular sports store sells them here.

I would second the vote for the Feiyue shoes, most comfortable training shoe I have ever worn and you can get them with ankle support, excellent grip as well and don't look bad, used by Parkour as well for this reason.

I actually need to order a new pair as my wife accidentally through them out, but they are dirt cheap to buy online, check on Ebay!

I think you should wear these...

They'd make sparring more interesting. :)

I find them at sports authority, dunhams, dicks, and many smaller sporting good stores during wrestling season.

How does the fact that you can buy them in America make it not American -centric?????

:( and I really tried to modify my answer to not be American centric.

I didn't mention American Stores by name because of that. Has OP mentined where s/he lives? That might help in answering then.

Really though? They don't sell shoes in sports stores? I mean the right shoe is a part of doing sports...........

Or they don't even have sports stores like they do over here?

We don't have wrestling. There are only 50 Olympic wrestling clubs in the whole country. Therefore sports stores don't have wrestling shoes.

Ahhh, is THAT is why I always hear commentary about poor wrestling quality in PRO MMA fighters from over there?
