I do sports therapy consultations on the side of my karate training. Currently I have four clients, all of whom got hurt doing CrossFit. They went to different facilities but all were taught very poor form. Their "instructors" didn't do screenings (medical questionnaires, posture assessments, biomotor ability testing etc), fitness testing, or adhere to sports training principles to any respectable degree. CrossFit should replace the 'F' in its name with 'Sh'.
Hmmm...I studied chem at University, something familiar...effadrine (sic) and NH3...:wow: I didn't hear it...:vanish:
i don't understand crossfit. why don't people just find a good weights gym, that includes some things like a rope to climb. the whole lifting past the point of exhaustion just seems like a recipe for disaster.
Can't say for the others but our CF did not go to that point 'xcept for advanced. Also there was a required "OnRamp" programme to determine baseline fitness, demo proper lifting form (sans weights) and the like. Certainly not trying to counter-point here...would like to hear more.
old article from 2008: http://www.t-nation.com/free_online...rmance_investigative/the_truth_about_crossfit report on what goes on at a CF cert: http://www.t-nation.com/free_online...formance_investigative/crossed_up_by_crossfit newer article from this year: http://www.t-nation.com/training/crossfit-the-good-bad-and-the-ugly warning: naughty language in the articles. also worth noting that as mentioned in the articles, a lot of affiliates pretty much wipe their asses with the asinine HQ recommendations and train somewhat more in line with what's sane and proper. the guys i'm training with are big on correct technique, for example, to the point where one of the coaches won me over while teaching the snatch by basically saying (paraphrased) "the snatch is my favourite exercise, so i want to see proper ones. this is a 'crossfit snatch' like what you'll see a lot of people do [*does a half-assed wide stance power snatch*]. this is wrong. you have to do it like this [*does a proper full snatch*]". they're also not weak at all, with the head coach being a huge beastly mothertrucker with a 200kg squat and 120kg hang power clean, who runs really fast while dragging behind him weights that i can't even budge (not that i'm very strong, mind you ). so yeah, basically as i see it, it's a good way to test your general abilities, find out where you're lacking, and get some non-specialized work to even yourself out without having to dedicate yourself full-time to something else, while being pretty damn fun and letting you play around with equipment that you won't find in many gyms (particularly outside of first-world countries), but glassman, a pretty huge portion of HQ and many affiliates who probably don't know any better promote an official line based on lunacy, which makes CF be instantly associated by many with idiotic methodologies.
People who want to learn how to lift would be better off going to a powerlifting/Olympic lifting gym. You'll find people who know what they're talking about. Sure, there are lots of CrossFit coaches who can teach good form. But they're outnumbered by all the crap ones who wouldn't know good form if it walked up to them in a "My name is Good Form" t-shirt, said "Hi, my name is Good Form", and kicked them in the nuts. Or at least find a strength coach who has qualifications awarded from an organisation other than CrossFit itself.
But what is a cross fit bro? http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=qnjYyfkcaNI&desktop_uri=/watch?v=qnjYyfkcaNI
So the jist being at best its a fad programme for a load of suburban-elite-athlete-wannabees who are not really getting anywhere useful for all their huffin'? At worst these suburban athletes are doing terribly dangerous and ridiculous things for lack of an instructor of any description. Fair assessment of the thinking here ? - save for a lucky few like FOD, maybe myself who've decent/good instruction. If the video clip below shows a good representation of what you've encountered in most CF places, then I'd have to agree... The suburban elite thing is bang on, I had a minor run in with a CF affiliate because apparently my programming was ripping of CF. We where doing squat bench dead followed by a circuit.... My argument was, you didn't invent the god damn barbell. Things escalated and I felt the need to inform him that he was not a warrior, despite what he thought on his Facebook page, he's a upper middle class tool who does circuits for an hour 4x a week, he needs to stop pretending it's his lifestyle and that it has any bearing on who he is. That video does my head in, it actually boils my urine lol. 1 it's posted by 30 bananas a day, a total wackjob vegan who needs to get a job. 2 most of the stuff there isn't crossfit footage, most of it is from open gym times in crossfit gyms, so ermm, the public do stupid stuff in gyms? That's nothing new. 3 most of the moments have NO place in crossfit, crossfit had it's 9 principle movements, none of them are continental cleans, zercher squats or sissy squats. The dude doing sissy's isn't even in a crossfit gym! And all the footage of the continentals is of a strongman seminar that just happens to have been hosted in a CF gym, an axle can only be cleaned like that unless you like breaking your wrists and teeth at the same time. I did continental clean and jerk with a 85kg axle today, but it wasn't in a box so every one was cool with it, the min someone misses a lift and it looks like it may be in a CF gym everyone goes mad. I've seen plenty of PLers miss deads with horrendous form and that is just considered part and parcel apparently.
When a CF'er goes on one of their rants I draw solace from the fact that I can still kick the snot out of them in exceptionally short order.....
So, you like the video, then? Seriously, though, I've not seen any of the rubbish at my gyms CF as been described here.
Speaking of first-world countries, when did you move back to Argentina? I thought you were livin in Norway these days?
around march last year, after norwegian bureaucracy decided not to keep me there as an adult (and thus no longer covered by my filial ties to a diplomatic attaché). i'm actually going back for 2.5 months in about 10 days (and have plans to go back in the long term after finishing uni and working for a bit)
