Okay, what DO we advocate for rape prevention?

Since the last thread derailed a bit, I started this one. Hope that's okay...I promise I won't let this one end up being about me and my rabid, man destroying, taser happy, decent-single-dude slicing madness. :D

So basically, let's have some concrete rape prevention ideas.

Short term... Your daughter is going out for the night. What behavioural rules do you want her to follow - not just 'be aware of your surroundings' but a set of easily remembered rules for her to follow? What do you want her to have on her - improviseable weapons for example? Ideas I shared in the other thread included soft drinks cans and hair slides (the claw shaped ones).

Long term... what steps would you like her to take to be safer? What skills would you ask her to learn? BJJ, Judo, Muay Thai? Carry and learn to use range weapons if they're legal? Assertiveness training since a goodly proportion of rapists hunt based on behavioural signals of vulnerability?

    Go.

Pepper spray because it's more accepted to walk around carrying pepper spray than a knife. Plus it's a non-lethal ranged weapon that's proven effective when used properly and doesn't take much training to make use of it. I generally don't recommend women carry knives as the male attackers are typically stronger by nature and the chance of getting disarmed is higher.

For long term I'm a BJJ advocate for obvious reasons. When the attacker's usual goal is to get between the woman's legs and she has a nasty BJJ guard game, the position becomes less scary. It'll get her used to dealing with larger, aggressive male attackers in a resistant training environment, teach her proper technical skills for positioning and attacking, and give her a solid basis of ways to get off the ground and back to her feet.

Because I have a daughter who just turned 13, I can apply my previous knowledge and experience

First, you have to educate her on rape, before she gets into the age of dating.

This has to be a clear study, covering the types and data-information of rape.

    You cannot take a single statement;
    "Rape is Rape"

    Statutory Rape is slightly different

Also, it has to be shown, that accusing someone of rape is very serious. There are "false rape reports" out there.

In other words, females should not cry rape if they have false intentions to get vendictive

This all said, as per my opening remark,

If she is about to go out, you as a parent, should have had these discussions going on for sometime.

Prevention in rape and/or self defense, goes a long way....

.......that all said, I want to greet her dates. When they see me cleaning my gun or removing fake blood off one of my swords, I may feel slightly at ease. :)

    Thanks everyone.

I agree on pepper spray. Most rapists aren't marines who can shrug off an OC blast.

BJJ too, probably don't need to point out why!

Also because it's worth elaborating on...hinged claw type hairslides.

I don't mean anything metallic you wear in your hair. I'm talking the ones that are made up of two convex claw like shapes and a hinge. You wear them if you have long hair, which most women do, and it's quite easy to just reach up and pull one out. If you were already struggling with a rapist and had a hand free you could pull one out and jam it pretty much anywhere in his soft tissue. Not a nice feeling.

This depends on how you will be dressed or where would you be going.

well for one you have to educate her on locating and using improv weapons such as keys, credit cards, pens, hair brush, etc, etc.

second you have to teach her about situational awareness. always locate who is around you. what am i consuming? who has touched it? do i know people who are around me? who are the people who are "too friendly" or "too quiet"?

third your daughter has to know how to project herself. to be confident without the arrogance. a good posture and verbal communication help in removing her as a "target" in most people's eyes.

teach her how to say NO with conviction. give her a whistle. tell her to call attention to herself when she is in need of help.

Can't take pepper spray everywhere either. And pepper spray isn't going to run out of your purse and across your apartment to you when that bloke you brought home who seemed like a nice guy turns out to not be such a nice guy after all.

Nothing works in 100% of situations. But there's something to be said for a strong, loyal dog for a young woman who lives alone. It's just a thought.

also teach her that the sweet spots are:

    eyes (poke/ elbow)
    ears (slap/ elbow)
    nose (slap/ headbutt/ elbow)
    jaw (slap/ elbow)
    throat (poke/ elbow)
    groin (grab/ slap/ knee/ kick)
    knees (knee/ kick)
    instep (stomp)
    foot (stomp)

also you know those vale tudo rules?

no biting, no fish hooking, no eye gouging, no groin shots, no throwing people on their heads, no blows to the throat, neck and spine?

well teach them that it is ok to bite, fish hook, gouge the eyes, hit the groin, hit the throat, neck and spine.

    I would give the advice:

"IF you're leaving a club alone, or with a friend, take your rape alarm/pepper spray/taser OUT of your purse and keep it around your wrist."

Although I think it might be offensive with the last two there...

No weapons, no martial arts. Three simple rules:

    1. Monitor your alcohol intake. Don't become insensible.
    2. Don't leave the pub/club without your friends.
    3. Don't go home with any guy that you don't know well. If you meet someone you fancy, let them take you out to dinner some time.

    Watch your drink

Watch your drink and your food. A lot of rapist use date rape drugs that render you unconscious. When you come to, you don't remember what happened. A lot of rapes are not done by complete strangers rather they are done by someone you know. Never take your eye off your drink. (food)

Get a conceal weapons permit if they are legal in your area.
