Hi guys! I'm looking for a place to train in Wing Chun in Nottingham, wondered if anyone here had any advice or recommendations on who to try and who to avoid? So far I've looked at Natural Wing Chun in Ockbrook, Foshan Wing Chun at Beeston and Nottingham Wing Chun in Carlton. If anyone has any experience with them or any other classes in Nottingham, that'd be great! I should also say I'm happy to travel to Derby
I'd advise you to look for a school that spars and pressure tests. Kamon wingchun could be a good bet if there is one in your area. Have you trained wingchun before?
Thanks! There doesn't seem Thanks! There doesn't seem to be one near me. No, I'm brand new to martial arts entirely
If you're brand new then approach wing chin with caution as there is a tendancy within wingchun training to create a culture where BS is allowed to flourish and ideas and theories of fighting go untested. Definitely find a school that spars at the very least and really do research into anything you get told and apply your own critical thinking. Good luck finding a club you like!
Had a brief look. Gary Lam Wing Chun looks decent going by their videos but as a caveat I would echo Knee Riders comments..Wing Chun practitioners can be notorious for getting bogged down in theory and a lack of sparring outside of chi-sao, Saying that I trained with Kamon for a time and I learned and added some useful skills for my toolbox. garylamwingchun Gary Lam Wing Chun Kung Fu Nottingham
This is what you should be thinking about to help you choose where and what to train. If you just want a hobby, something to master, somewhere to meet like-minded people then sparring may not appeal to you, as long as you understand what you train may not help you that much in self defence. If you want to learn to protect yourself then you may want to consider another style or like others have said choose a Wing Chun place that spars and make up your own mind whether it works or not and if it's for you. Have you considered a JKD class? In my opinion it has the good bits from Wing Chun and blends with kickboxing and arguably more 'practical' and dynamic than pure Wing Chun. Good luck in your search, hope you find your place somewhere
I think some students of mine once tried Nottingham Wing Chun at Carlton and thought it was ok, I'll check for you. It was a long time ago though. Not that far from Carlton to Southwell, mind
Just to add, yes, they tried Nottingham Wing Chun and enjoyed the classes, lots of sticky hands apparently.
Thanks guys! I'm heading to Carlton tomorrow to check out the class there, I also really enjoyed the Foshan Wing Chun class at Beeston
