My current pc is very loud. I have a 7970 so could probably keep that and the power-supply, ram and hard drives. I think I'll build a new pc using the components I have. What case, fans, mother board, processor and retailers would people recommend? At the moment I would just want counter strike global offensive at solid 120 fps, yeh I know a raspberry pi could do that or something. But I'd like to be able to upgrade my ram and maybe crossfire or upgrade my graphics card at some point. Don't say use google, please. I posted this to save me some google time. Thanks for reading.
I couldn't tell you about recommendations for a gaming machine, but I can tell you that I spent a couple of quid on noise-cancelling silicon screw washers, and it made my very loud PC much, much quieter. Not as fun as a new machine, but if you haven't tried them yet, give them a go. I just stuck them between the fan and the case, and the case door, now my PC makes about 1/4 of the noise it used to.
Find the source of your noise. I will bet 90% of it is from your 7970. How many fans and what case you using at the moment? For cases I have a preference for Corsair, the obsidian range is nice. The CoolerMaster range is also good. Depending on budget Tianjin and many others. Akasa, Coolermaster, Corsair, all do great fans look out for "silent series" in all of these mine are a mix of corsair and coolermaster all silent. Mobos you can't go wrong with Asus, Gigabyte, MSI. I would avoid brands like ASROCK. There's only one processor manufacturer worthy of recommendation for gamers. Intel. What series depends again on what you have right now and your budget. I would also suggest waiting for Pascal to be dropped before doing anything. The Graphics market and gaming market is about to change drastically due to it. You can get things like sealants to make your case less noisy, along with replacing your current fans to silent ones. Also I would get rid of that 7970 and go for something like a GTX 970 assuming you're on a 1080p screen.
Thanks for the reply. I noticed last night that I felt so much better when I turned it off. Yeh a new pc is tempting . I'm lucky enough to have some spare cash atm. I wouldn't download graphics mods or anything but I like 50-60 fps at 1080p for single player games. I'll do some investigating on which fans/components are noisiest. One of my case fans just balnces on top of a hard drive unscrewed.
Wow bit of a doh moment. I just checked what speed the fan was set to on the 7970 and it was 100% I think I changed the fan on the 7970 to one that has 3 fans, I don't know what make but I think it was one you mentioned... got to find my screw driver. Your'e right though I put it 100% because I was testing over clocking. But I think it does go noisy when I'm playing games. 2 of the cheapest case fans I could see and the cheapest case. I've got an amd x4 955 phenom but I think I will go to intel because I think my processor is holding back my framerate. I'll do some cheaper noise reduction methods before 'Pascal' drops. That should drop the price of gtx's I imagine. My monitor is 32 inch and maximum res is 2560 by 1440.
Definite bottleneck with the CPU. Pascal soon, I would grab either one of the new lower tier Pascal cards, for 120fps on 1440p you're looking at 980 + AMD cards are just noisy. MY 6990s are horrifcly loud. You get better performance, A LOT LESS NOISE, and better temps on the 9 series cards. I was gonna splash and make a new system in December, decided to wait for pascal.
Yeah, anything that can rattle, will rattle! I've got an 8 core AMD FX-9590 and a Corsair H80i hydro, which are consistently maxed-out because I do a lot of 3D rendering for work. I was amazed how much of the noise was caused by case vibration after I stuck those noise-cancelling washers on, and they are very cheap.
I think the anti-monopolist in me made me sway with amd for the last 3 pc's I've made over the past ten years. I installed ubuntu on my dads pc but he was having too many problems with the differences from windows.
I've been looking at some review sites and they seem to report different dba and cooling values. They use different systems but the max dba appears to vary. I wouldn't want to go much over £150 / $213 or 30 dba? Silverstone seem to do well and the nzxt phantoms as well as the ones you recommended CrowZero.
The better Silverstone cases tend to be pricier, I'm not a fan of the "lower" end Phantom cases because I'm not a fan of plastic cases. To be honest any Corsair, Coolermaster, Tianjin, Silverstone case not described as "value" or "budget" will give you decent to similar performance in terms of noise. What matters more are the components inside making the noise. (Mainly your fans of choice and graphics card.) At 30 Decibals or lower you really won't notice it and can sleep through it. I must add, my case has had no panel for over 6 months. Im so used to the noise, and when I'm gaming and my 6990s go crazy I have headphones anyway.
So far i'm thinking case ft05 - £140 (seems to do well on most reviews) Would I need more case fans I think it has 3? processor - intel i5 6500 £140 (the 6600 is overclockable but I'll be trying to keep temperatures noise down) Gotta research a cooler fan for it. msi gtx 970 - £265 (I think it's the quietest) mobo - msi... something, because I imagine it would work well together with the msi gtx 970. some ram Ive got a 750w be-quiet psu, 3 tb hard drive. Damn, just checked my ram on speccy it's 8gb at 669 mhz I'll have to spend more. I'm sure I bought better ram than that I'll check my bios.
FT05 is nice, but I'm sure you can pick up a Corsair Carbide which is cheaper and looks very similar externally. Fans are up to you. Depends on your setup. Your CPU is good, go for the 6600k if you can (I think the price difference is really negligible). Just get a CPU water cooler from the corsair series, I run a h60 on an i7 2600k that's overclocked to 4.7ghz, my idle temps are between 30-40c, even on load never above 70cish. The MSI twin Frozr is my 970 of choice, no it will not work any better on a MSI motherboard than it would on an ASUS or Gigabyte, and honestly when it comes to Mobos, I would go with Asus or Giga over MSI, but in terms of Nvidia GPU's MSI.
I usually ignore most pc component developments until I need a new pc. Do you keep up to date for your work or just a interest?
Thanks for the recommendations. I had a msi motherboard once, and had some trouble with it I can't remember what the problem was. Gigabyte, I have used for the last 2 and they seem to cause me no problems.
Interest, and I'm the go to guy for building friends, family, friends of friends PCs. I also buy them test them then sell them. I enjoy making a PC the same way I enjoy a movie or gaming. Whenever there's new tech out I look at whether it's worth upgrading. I can still max 99% of games and run everything else. But I'll be building something as soon as Pascal hits.
I like testing too, when Black Ops 3 came out, I tested different drivers, overclocks, and tested Windows 8.1 Windows 10 and 7 (all 64 bit) in the space of two days.
I've got my new pc. My aux jack snaped into the aux out. Google says use a super glue and a match but it won't come out. Heating a nail or something to melt into the plastic wont the aux is all smashed. Do usb sound cards work well or is an normal sound card better? I'm thinking of this one - http://www.amazon.co.uk/USB-SoundBox-7-1-Sound-Card/dp/B004Y0ERRO I'll need a aux cable with a red and white end for my speakers they are 2.1. Some of the cables are nearly 10 pound.
