Thought this video was interesting. It came up in my YouTube suggestions.

I thought it'd be interesting to share for a few reasons:

    1) it was interesting culturally: alludes to discourse in Chinese culture around values, the martial arts, government control and sonewhat shows the effect of government censorship on people's lives, thoughts and self expression.

    2) there was some info on Tai chi in China which is be interested in hearing people's opinions on (especially those with experience in Tai chi).

    3) it appears a new challenge match has been set up and I'm curious when that will happen, who the opponent is and how that will go down.

    Hmm, interesting.

What he says is not wrong - there is a lot of BS surrounding Chinese martial arts, particularly the "neijia" styles.

Tai Chi has long been promoted as a traditional health regime by the government, and since the cultural revolution and suppression of traditional aspects of Chinese culture.

The most interesting thing I found was tge disagreement he had with his manager at the end of the video - the presenter said the government has condemned his actions: has he been punished in some way, that he can't discuss?

With China, any level of censorship is possible. I am genuinely interested to see just how far this guy goes though. I hope he branches out from just CMA.

I'd like to see who he's planning on fighting in future.

His opponent in the first match wasn't up to much: created his own "version" of tai chi, and from some accounts was more than a little into the 'mystical' side of the art.

    If Mr. MMA continues to fight obvious frauds;
    1) ok, it shows up the frauds for what they are
    2) if he doesn't challenge more "genuine" practitioners, how will he change the mass-approach to martial arts in China? Keep beating the obvious frauds, and the traditional teachers won't reassess potentially ineffective training methods because "that guy was obviously a fake, and didn't get the genuine transmission".

If I call myself a grandmaster how much $ will I make when he kos me? How much you folks wanna crowd source my training & traveling expenses? Not saying I'll last any longer but at least I won't look awesomely clueless.

I fail to see why people and the media, incl folks such as Joe Rogan, continue to call some bum who studied for two years a grandmaster just because he calls himself one.

Oh well,it's the general media outlets we actually have to thank for the anti vaccine movement, the Lexan plastic hysteria, the Alar banning etc.,so I guess I shouldn't expect too much.In things such as these,it's about sales, not real news.

Any future fights against any legit practitioners of TC or most all other "trad" CMAs are pointless if it's MMA rules. There are no shoots etc in TC,and despite the incorrect perception in vogue since the explosion of push hands tourneys it's no more a stand up grappling system than most CMAs.Not that that matters in the context of an MMA rules match as it suuuure ain't got no groundwork.

Any rule set that allows action continuing on the floor would be stupid for anyone who is just a ch'uan fa practitioner to agree to.And if they're doing anything else in addition bar shuai jao then they're not representing "trad" CMAs.If the MMA practitioner can't use all their stuff what's the point for them?

As a genuine point of discussion; what do you see as TJQ's "optimum range"?

Answer: Mr MMA will win by exactly the same way.

Surely that will depend on who his opponent is?

So, you see it primarily as a (hand) striking system?

Re: "stand up grappling", could you expand on your definition of this?

Genuinely interested in having this discussion. If you're up for it, should we blow the cobwebs off of the Tai chi forum?

Tai chi vs others? Because this has been argued in seperate threads and would be nice to have one.

I'm quite interested in following a conversation between two experienced practitioners about their perspectives on standing grappling and pugilism within Tai Chi and every incoherent empty post you drop in here without properly reading what you are replying to detracts from the likelihood of that discussion emerging and breaks the flow of the thread; so please just start another or really think about what you are actually contributing/asking before doing so.

As a result of no longer being able to receive the net @ home I have trouble participating here at the level I used to 'cause I only can on my half hour lunch break @ work.
Plus we have a family member in the hospital now.

Howe'er I'll try and be involved re: the above questions if I'm able.If you want to start a thread in the TC forum on these topics go to.I'll bet Mr. W. will be there.Right now I'm gobbling lunch and it's almost quittin' time!

Not a tai chi guy but the old frame Yang style I did for a few years was much more striking orientated than the new frame Yang style I had done, also on other forums have seen it argued Chen style is basically a derivative of local Lon fist or ethnic boxing styles hence one of the forms is called cannon fist

The majority of my exposure and training has been Chen and I have certainly found it a little more "impactive" in certain aspects - equally this could be schools/teaching as much as anything else
