You can just stick an xbox controller in a usb port and it should work. But honestly playing it with mouse and keyboard is fine. Touchpad and keyboard no.

I use my PS3 pad for just about everything, makes it easier for me when I'm running PCSX2 to play my old PS2 titles. I personally prefer Fallout using controller but I attribute that to me first playing it on PS3. I recommend downloading a bunch of mods to enhance the base graphics and models of the game too. I get most of mine from Nexusmods.
