Since they (UK Police) love giving out statistics. About 5% actually know or train in MA as a outside hobby. Thats actually up from 10yrs ago. Partially from an extended interest in MA as well as...well...less of them from 10yrs ago. Also 5.4 on the bleep is the pass rate. But if you venture onto other more physically demanding paths (TSG/"riot", cyclist) then the pass rate for the bleep is higher.
I didn't know that stats, thanks. Also, I didn't mention the higher bleep test scores, as you can't specialise in anything until you have served your probation, which is 2 years
In terms of what a martial art could teach you that might be of use. to make it harder for someone to punch you in the face by getting out the way - introductory level boxing. to make it harder for someone to pull, push, or throw you around if they grab you or your clothes- introductory level judo. to make it harder for someone to stab or cut you with a knife - introductory level escrima/kali. to make it harder for someone to dominate you on the ground - introductory level BJJ or mma. to make it harder for someone to punch or kick you by grabbing them - this would require more than an introductory level but you could get it from - Most 5 animal hand kungfu (such as hung gar), some types of karate, some types of escrima/kali and mma. to make a violent situation less emotionally and mentally overwhelming - this tends not to be specific to any particular art but you want an instructor that includes role play and scenarios for violence within their training syllabus.
I’m not a LEO, but I know several. From what I’ve seen, I think running and grappling are the two things where prior experience are going to really benefit you. BJJ or judo is good, and run a lot (3k to 5k at a fast pace is more important than 10k+ at a slower pace).
dont underestimate the importance of doing some kind of striking art like boxing. although Leos are generally discouraged from KOing suspects. a suspect might happily try to KO an LEO. So knowing how to dodge is likely to be of practical use.
Just contacted a local Judo club that my current instructor recommended, in Ford, Shrewsbury, so I will start there when I've finished this years physique competitions.
If your in that part of the midlands, these guys have a great rep in the judo world. Wrekin Star Judo Club
I rolled with one of their instructors several years ago, they were doing free after schools at my college. A guy who had trained there and competed at Commonwealth (IIRC) games level took a session too. It was good, but unfortunately it's on nights I currently work.
