If it's too far to go regularly, why not get in contact with your nearest school and see if they mind you coming in on a semi-regular basis to hone what you learn in your books? Books and youtube will only take you so far, there will never be any substitute for a knowledgeable instructor.

In Ayr. The instructor is registered (I think) with Warriors Escrima. Unfortunately there is no website for the local club. The class is currently on a break but hopefully will start again soon. In the meantime I was looking at getting into HEMA knife. But thats another story.

I doubt that. If you've learnt from a book you're not even a beginner. There isn't to my knowledge tutorial book on JKD. There are books covering principles, but not a definitive JKD how to. Some instructors have done a DVD series, but again this isn't an A to Z. In addition to the above who are you comparing yourself to, who have you tested yourself against and how long have you been teaching yourself.

This is really the only physical discipline that people try to apply book learning to, no one's stupid enough to ask if you can learn how to ride a bike by reading a book.
Lets just say it is not the best depiction of the art as it relates to interpersonal violence....and some techniques are just horrible
Didn't the guys teaching JKD learn it from the books?, it is not a style anyway....right? Did some guys just read his books and then try to cash in on Bruce Lee name by saying that they are teaching JKD? From what I heard, after he died his students could not make his stuff work, they were to slow or something like that.
