This. Its important that you first and foremost are enjoying the first training and you are getting what you want out of it. If non sporting styles or martial arts that aren't so much sparring focused are more your thing then go for it, without a doubt you will learn heaps from what they have to offer (both the positive and the negative).

Best advice would be to go visit all the local clubs in your area regardless of what style they are and see which one you like, as you get more experienced you can always cross train or move on and do something else altogether if you want (nothing wrong with doing that). All we can really do here on MAP is share what has worked for us and what we have learnt, but we can't make up your mind for you or anything like that (as much as some of us would probably like to).

    It's a sliding scale.

My partner practised Japanese Jujitsu (black belt 1st dan & instructor certificate) combined with Full Contact Kickboxing and she's pretty competent at defending herself when we roll. She's not the tallest girl. Probably around your height.

I used to practice Bujinkan Ninjutsu. It's ok but I think in the modern world you're better off taking up a seperate grappling art and a seperate striking art. Judo, Wrestling, or Jiu Jitsu as your grappling. Muay Thai, Boxing, or Kickboxing (full contact, not the semi contact crap) for your striking.

Good luck with whatever you choose to train in.

I wasn't having a go, I wasn't offended or anything. I genuinely thought you were dead serious, and when I said "sorry", it wasn't sarcastic :)

...wait, now everything I type looks sarcastic
