Hello fellow ITF TKD guys and gals. In this thread we just talk about ITF patterns/tuls. If you want to you can post up videos or photos of patterns. Discuss about if patterns are necessary or not in today's ITF training. Have you're say on what makes a really good pattern or not. Give advice to other people if needed or whatever. One of my favorite ITF pattern guys is Jaroslaw Suska from Poland. You can look him up on youtube. Here is one of my favorite patterns by him; [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s3BvnSCtJg8]Ge-Baek[/ame] Yes I want to be able to preform Ge-Baek as good as him by time I get my black belt. At the moment I'm only a lowly green tip (7th kup) Heres him doing my pattern; [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IlFDtke_jhc]Do-San[/ame] I'm trying to get my pattern looking like that for my next grading. So I can impress Master Rua Kaiou (He takes my gradings) I will post up some videos of me doing some patterns soon (When I get a video camera!) Then you guys can watch me and tell me how much I suck! Lol! Anyway enough from me I want to here from you so get posting.
My favourite pattern is between Yul-Gok and Hwa-Rang. Hwa-Rang is very powerful, yet really pretty!! And I happen to be quite good at Yul-Gok.
Do you have any videos of you doing Yol-Gok? We would love to see you do that pattern! Heres a video of another pattern which happens to be one of my favorites as well; [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6oMqxJLRxHY]Moon Moo [/ame]
The one thing I hate the most is bad patterns. I feel sorry for students when teachers teach them crap techniques and bad habits. Then the student receives their black belt and start teaching other students their crap techniques and bad habits. These people go on become the teachers of mcdojo's without even realizing what they are teaching is wrong and could end up hurting people (the students). Here are some prime examples; [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=goglTO43pes]Poor kid [/ame] [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Ess5Js-JuI]A horrible to watch instructor[/ame] Why! Why! Why! :bang:
Poor kid: If the camera were zoomed in closer you could see fewer mistakes. What's with the open hand on middle blocks and the right thumb sticking out like a hitchhiker neara the end? Horrible...instructor: If he moved any faster you could see fewer mistakes. Actually, it's probably not that bad, it's just a bad example of what to aspire towards. Thanks.
Forms are one of my favorite things to learn during training. It really irks me when people think they are not important to either learn or learn to do well. IMO, forms are part of what makes martial arts an ART. When done well, they are beautiful. The two examples shown earlier, unfortunately, do not reflect that beauty, although the beach is nice to look at.
These are currently my favorite. Search YouTube for Jaroslaw Suska and ITF. Here's Choong-Gun: [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xPgEorDwC5Y"]Joong-Gun - YouTube[/ame] and Gae_Baek: [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B9UWtQ7IcCw&mode=related&search="]YouTube[/ame] Once you find one of his, it's easy to spread out to many others. Most seem to be from trulshotvedt. Here's Chon-Ji: [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q1usXzVAehg&mode=related&search="]Chon-Ji - YouTube[/ame]
Thanks for the links; What I really meant was DVD's Yes Jaroslaw Suska is my favorite person too watch so far in the area of pattern work.
Well, instead of being solely about fighting (although I recognize that they are patterned after a series of attacks and defenses), they require a great emphasis on form, timing, balance, etc. Granted, most martial arts techniques do, but I equate the patterns with, say, the routine a gymnast prepares using the skills he/she has practiced for years. Don't get me wrong, I'm not a huge fan of gymnastics, nor do I think the two sports are that closely related, but I think the comparison can help you understand a little what I mean. If not, let me know and I'll try again!
I'm not sure which "fellow" to whom you are referring.... Sorry...I might just not be following where you're going...bear with me.
