I've returned to Taiji after a long absense.

I started studying the Wu style (Wu Chian Chuan) just over twenty years ago. A couple of years later I moved to another city, and there was nothing similar available, so I just continued to practise what I knew but without a class to go to.

Over the course of the next few years I did various other things (Nam Pai Chuan, Judo) before moving back home again. Now I'm re-learning my Wu form, and really enjoying it.

    Well here we go....

My name is Neale and I live in Burnaby BC Canada (right near Vancouver). I have had a long interest in martial arts and studied (though not seriously) in high school a style called Jukado

Many years later, life has happened, and now I am 53 and was looking for a good exercise program. My wife said why not go back to martial arts, you always loved it.

Well as a 53 year old fat guy, Tai Chi seemed a good way to go. I love watching people doing it in parks etc.

My good wife of 30 years bought me a dvd, but the instructor only faced the camera and it made me confused as I had to learn everything backwards. After some research, I found Dr. Paul Lam and ordered his Tai Chi for Beginners DVD which has helped me immensely. I am learning the Yang style in a beginners shortened set from the 24 forms.

Although I have only been at this a couple of months, I already find I am more relaxed and a bit more coordinated :)

I do plan to find a teacher eventually but for now, this works for me.

    Hi,Ventguy.Welcome.

Jukado? That was Bruce Tegner's system?

You may be unaware that you live in an area with one of the better practitioners in N. America,Liang,Shou-yu.

You might seriously consider looking into study with him or one of his senior students. This is a non-partisan recommendation,I have no association of any sort w/these folks.

At any rate, drop the vid and seek out instructors who teach structure and alignment.

If for naught else, for the sake of thy blessed knees.

    Jukado and Tai Chi dvd

Yes it was Bruce Tegner's system.

I don't mean to sound ungrateful, but it is really easy to say "drop the vid". It is working for now, and I am searching for classes near me that I can afford. I am a self employed entertainer so money can be short at times.

Thanks for the suggestion of Liang,Shou-yu. I will check into that.

    AndrewTheAndroid A hero for fun.

I've dabbled in taiji for a few years but now I've found a Chen style teacher in Kunming. I'll see if I can post some training videos at a later date.

Well looks like I'm back doing Yang style, after a very long break due to a number of reasons I stepped into a Taiji class today.

I'd forgotten how much I liked Taiji.

Ive dabbled in taiji at the local gym, sadly its a class aimed more at getting older folks to socialise so I stick out a bit haha. I do have some instructional DVDs I learned a bit from a long time ago, but now Im looking to find a regular class to compliment my other internal arts (if you believe the idea of that distinction, which I personally dont), Tsumenquan and Bagua. Its funny because Ive moved over from Hung, Bujinkan, Escrima and Muay Thai into these arts because I feel the way they are taught is better for me and helps my anxiety better.

    Hi, I’m Phil.
I first practiced taiji in about 1982, learning the 24 step short form (Yang?), with pushing hands and various chi gung exercises and forms (dragon, goose and some I don’t recall the names of, much less the forms themselves).
Before starting tai chi, and with some overlap, I practiced Shotokan Karate, and various other arts in bits and pieces.
I discovered Chen taiji about ten years ago.
In the years since 1982 I’ve had many periods where I haven’t trained, so I’m nowhere near as experienced as the 37 years would indicate.

However, my claim to fame is that a Shaolin monk from one of their touring performing teams said to me about 5 years ago, “Your qigong is very nice!” I was on a cruise, and small touring team had been booked to perform on the cruise. Whilst on board, they ran a series of 6 morning classes. I was the only person who showed up with any previous experience, and I was about 20 years younger than everyone else, so I perhaps got a little more attention. It was about three lessons in when the head of the company came over to me with his compliment. It felt great, even if it was in comparison to a bunch of absolute beginners :)
