    Gee whiz.

Rataca, growth comes from putting yourself in uncomfortable situations and coming through them.

If just starting is uncomfortable then that's what you have to do.

None of the exercising/martial arts are difficult for me, well obviosuly im not going to have the ability to 540 degree kick or jumping spinning kick. And as i am going for a little bit, the easiest and simplest way to put anything is Paranoia.

You won't need a knife to walk along roads. In fact, for the sort of time periods you're suggesting, I can't see why you'd need a knife on any walks. You could probably pick up fairly cheap rucksacks that are decent quality at go outdoors, or blacks, possibly sports direct.

    +1

Everyone that even remotely knows me also knows that I am the last to brag.
But seriously, if someone claims to want to do MA and then comes with such a minor ouchie, I can only shake my head.

Oh, so you can do them all anyway?
    Then why bother training.

I for sure can't do all of the stuff I get shown and have to work hard for some of it.
Therefore I am in the lousy position to actually have to train to see what I can do and what I can't and therefore have to work on it.
I would have never knows by watching videos or training in different styles.

You never know when you might need a blade!

Nothing wrong with having a small, non-locking folder in your kit if you're taking a hike along country roads.

Sports direct is cheapest for rucksacks, followed by Trespass.

I've never had a situation where I've wanted one, but then again, I've not done a massive amount outside of DofE, so I'll bow out to voices of experience there. As for rucksacks, try them on, make sure they're comfy.

As apparently he's/shes previously declared mental health issues, (from DH post in the thread) advising them to carry a knife in public is a really irresponsible thing.

Ill bow out of the thread here.

    Way to discriminate.

Everyone who ever had a mental health issue is a danger to others and shouldn't be trusted with sharp objects?

Didn't you work in some capacity with psychiatric patients?

Wouldnt work anyway, i will detatch my nail and use it as a knife. :p

There would be some use and reason to carry one to carry one if i went to walk to another town, if i got lost, car crash etc. All thought i dont think i would be able to hitchhike if i had a Khukri on my belt.

On the backpacks, every shop but Mountain warehouse closed down and i dont know about sports direct, their shopside stock is a little lacking for my one.

Mountain Warehouse is good and cheap.

Its a cost/benefit decision, as I dont know what the condition is, I wouldn't suggest carrying knife, as it could potentially be a problem, And the benefit is so slight on small walks.
Also as people who do suffer mental issues are on average more at risk from others then they are to others, getting beaten up whilst carrying a knife also risks having the knife taken off and used against you.

So all in all, not knowing the full situation, plus a knife = more risk and negligible benefit.

Ps yes I did breifly , and saw a lot of self harm and one suicide, which I hope to never have to see again.

Its a pest to shop there, because they dont do any brand but their own. I have a few things from there however. I have a daypack from another one before it closed down but i havent used it for anything nor tried it with weight in it.

May opt to get PLCE/webbing instead of having a bag if its just to carry water and snacks.

I seem to have derailed this to a Bag buying guide. :p

You're talking about millions of people in the UK alone who have been prescribed psychiatric medicine at some point in their life.

What happens when you invite people round yours for dinner? Do you ask them if they've ever been on meds before handing out the cutlery?

I don't invite people I don't know to my place, I also wouldn't suggest to anyone I don't know, that they should carry a knife in public.

    I'm out of this thread.

@David Harrison: I think Dead_pool made a good point already: People with psychic problems are more often victim then aggressor and there is quite a real risk, that they might get wounded or worse with their own knife.

Everything you now add is like putting words in his mouth.

And I doubt anyone would argue, that a knife is not really something you need on a short hike.
Could you end up needing one? Yeah, sure.
You could also end up needing a saw. Or a rubber band. Or a rope. Or a bomb.
And yet it's rather unlikely on a simple beginner hike.

@OP: If you already have a bag then why do you need a new one to able to go for a hike?

Driving a car is far more likely to lead to a fatality than carrying a knife.

You're overreacting. No-one should walk in the country without a knife. Blades are the single most important tool humans ever invented, and the only tool you can carry that allows one to fashion everything needed for survival. That may sound irrelevant in the modern world, but people die of exposure in summer in the UK, and if you know how to use a knife that won't happen.

The elements are far more deadly than people.

How many people are waiting to attack ramblers in the UK countryside? Are the reavers making a comeback I didn't hear about?

And no, it's nothing like rubber bands, saws or bombs. That is ridiculous.

Anyway, as I said to DP in PM; Rataca100 is already adamant about carrying a knife, I only said it wasn't illegal as long as it's a non-locking folder (under 3" blade length and with valid reason for carrying).

Mod note: as we go forward, I am going to ask everyone to be mindful and respectful in how they address mental health issues in their posts. We have had more than one person on MAP feel that they can openly talk about having mental health problems over the years, and we would like to keep this a place where anyone can safely do so.

This doesn't mean you can't bring it up as it relates to any conversation on MAP. You can. It also doesn't mean that people with said issues can't have critical posts directed at them. That is also ok. Just take some extra care (if discussing said mental health issue) to reread it before hitting the send button to make sure it is said in a respectful way and that it doesn't feed the negative and incorrect stereotypes unduly.

Any questions about this should be handled by PMing the mod team.

    Thanks! :)
