Grip strength when lifting

A useful trick I picked up is "slipping the bar." Basically you get some plastic sheeting and wrap the bar with it...dumbbells, pull up bar, whatever. Wrap it around once with the opening toward where the thumb crosses the fingers. Those translucent plastic folders from a stationery store work perfectly for this.

This takes friction entirely out of the equation and limits your grip to your actual grip strength.

Next time me and the wife are shopping I guess I can get some practice doing farmer walks with her bags..Joking aside will add it as part of my training. Might be a stupid question but what in Thor's name is a suitcase carry I assume it is similar to a farmers walk (variant?).

    Thanks :)

I'm surprised by the amount of people here who appear to train their grip! We should start a Feats of Grip thread where we show off our grip strength. Not for a couple months though, when I'm closing a #3 CoC. Let's wait until I can show off the most. America has a reputation to uphold! (xD)

Here is another clip for bag throwing training. The suggested weight is from 16 lb to 23 lb.

If you aren't competing in powerlifting sort term answer is use straps, deads aren't a grip exercise so if that's what failing just get lifting straps it will allow you to keep a normal grip rather than switch to mixed grip which can effect muscular balance in the back

Long term answer farmer walks, grippers and the like

Also your lifting 5 days a week forearms get a load of abuse during most of the week anyway just doing normal things like drivingand work, so make sure you are resting the hands and forearms and not working them hard every day

To rotate 30 reps on one side and then 30 reps on the other side will give you a good amount of work out.

When you catch the bag, sometime your fingers will only grab on the corner of that bag without grabbing the inside material (BB). The weight of the bag will make the bag to pull it away from your fingers. This will challenge your grip strength over and over.

Sometimes I have to remind myself that not everyone who deadlifts and uses the alternating grip makes sure they rotate hands in that grip between sets. I've never heard of anyone developing muscular balance in the back due to it, but that's also because I don't know a ton of people who deadlift a whole lot. Do you have any source material on this? I would love to read up about it.

I hate the double overhand grip for deadlifts. I have issues with my shoulders and it pulls them too far forward, and then I also brush across my knees instead of shins in the double overhand.

A suitcase carry is a one handed Farmers Walk. You pick up one dumbbell with one hand and walk with it. It will really help with core strength as well, because your abs and obliques have to work hard to keep you straight when you have a weight in one hand only.
