Absolutely horrendous Simon. What utter utter spineless cowards to attack and intimidate kids and a family relaxing at home. Disgusting on every level.

I'm glad that you and yours came to no further harm.

Like everyone else, I am glad nothing worse came from it.

Not so convinced the system worked as good as it could have, since he got away with doing this to you. Have you thought about installing camera's in case anyone in that group comes to your home again? That way, you would have video evidence of anything like this, not just a he said/ he said thing.

When I originally read your first question, my reaction was I don't open my door for strangers period. Much less one asking/ telling me to step outside with no introduction or explanation. I have a metal locking screen door. I don't even unlock it for the occasional proselytizer that comes by. Then, I would have called the police, loud enough for them to hear -or announced that the police were called. And grabbed a weapon inside my house. Which reminds me, I really do need to buy an additional waxwood stick to keep in my house. Stick fighting is the weapon I spar with the most, so it is the one I think I could use best in a real live situation.

I am concerned over your son's mental trauma and hope he recovers.

What were the circumstances surrounding that original attack on him? Was it a bullying incident? A robbery? (If too personal, just forget I asked.)

The original attack was a bullying incident.

I'm hoping that now the court cases are over that my son gets some more confidence and starts to get out a lot more.

I will probably install camera now the police have taken theirs back.

:confused:Wait, so if you had camera's already.............

Wouldn't that incident be on the tape? Why did it come down to your word vs his if there was a camera there?

The camera had already been taken down.

At the time of the incident we only had the police alarm.

Damn Simon. Horrible to deal with.
But sadly also an example of something that would/should be covered by good SD practice and instructors (Geoff Thompson speaks at length about this kind of retribution/aftermath) that wouldn't be covered in an MMA class.
And why MMA or BJJ doesn't equal "self defence".
I'd imagine many MA instructors wouldn't even consider this sort of thing days, weeks or even months after an event let alone know what advice to give in the circumstances.
You've handled it amazingly well (but then you're the sort of person that would).

simon, there are several devices that now integrate with a wifi network and have smart phone apps. might be nice so you can use the device when you're away from home.

I'd close the door, grab a weapon. If he bangs on the door again I'd open it and let him walk in. Then hit him so hard he wouldn't want to get back up.

Thank you Simon for your kind words.

We've not spoken of the matter in subsequent meet ups, but my recollection is simply one of talking through the events with you. You had already done the most important thing which was to take decisions and actions that maximised your safety and that of your family (both before, during and after the event) under conditions that would have caused many normal (and even specially trained) people to freeze or make rash decisions.

I for one am grateful to have friends as wise as you.

Really? I thought you had the right to defend yourself even preemptively so if he had a knife and you defended yourself with whatever weapon you had at hand in your home, wouldn't that be self defense? Serious question? Of course you should never invite the guy in, that's just nuts. But suppose he tried to force his way in or something?

You go inside, get a knife from the kitchen and go back outside, it's no longer self defence.

And if he hits you first.

As instructors we hear this a lot. I'd do this, I'd do that.

Have you ever been hit, or stabbed for that matter.

I'd urge you to re-evaluate your training and ask yourself if you are really capable of doing what you say.

When it comes to the actual physical confrontation you need to understand before it starts if you are the type of person to walk away, or the type who will stand your ground.

You seem to have made the decision to stand your ground.

Can you back it up and is it worth the risk.

Yes and no...In certain circumstances if the threat is still present and a legitimate risk to person(s) you CAN retreat and equip yourself and reengage....it is just a really, really, REALLY stupid idea
