    Hi guys,

I'm a beginner Hung Gar practitioner interested in Chin Na - is this a good book? I would just like to get an overview i.e. theory and a few solid applications etc.

    Objective opinions only, please!

    Thank you!!!

hard to get the concepts and movements.. book is well written, but the video tapes that are available can add the movements to the concepts.. But on the downside, the tapes and presentation are real indepth and the associated voice over is monotone and will put you to sleep. Or at least it did me when I watched it a few years ago

    Pretty much what Kuntaoer said.

I do not consider it the best, but the "most" popular

In terms of an encyclopaedia of techniques Yang's work is probably the most comprehensive, in terms of learning about Chin Na Cartmell's Practical Chin Na is a better read.

Sifu Ben, do you mean Practical Chin Na: A Detailed Analysis of the Art of Seizing and Locking by Zhao Da Yuan but translated by Cartmell?

    thanks

That's the one, although TBF I've only seen Cartmell's video version.

    Hi again guys,

I'm also interested in learning about basic Shuai Jiao. I'm considering buying one of the below. Anybody have either/both and could advise whether one would be "better"?

Shuai Jiao - Kung Fu Wrestling, Fundamental Techniques - Yang Jwing Ming DVD
The Method of Chinese Wrestling - Tim Cartmell - Book

    THANKS!

The method of Chinese Wrestling is very interesting and certainly worth getting, especially if you can get it cheap on Amazon, but it is 90 years old, so not necessarily what you'd expect as an instructional. Chinese Fast Wrestling for Fighting is a better buy if you want to learn about throwing for Kung Fu (although like I say, I'd recommend getting both).
From what I've seen of Yang's DVD it seems to straddle the line between Shuai Jiao and Chin Na, which for Kung Fu purposes is great, but might not tell you that much about actual Shuai.
I've got this http://budointernational.com/en/dow...nload-dvd-shuai-chiao-black-belt-program.html and it's A) peanuts (indeed with the 3 for Eur25 you could pick up their other Shuai Jiao vids, including one by YouKnowWho's teacher's son) and B) is pretty decent and is kinda like a video version of Method of Chinese Wrestling.

    I strongly recommend David C. K. Lin's Chan-Chiao Theory book.
