    Both. He intended to check the kick in a destructive way. Thereafter...how effective a particular technique is depends on so many factors that the outcome is not in anyone's full control really. Even the most controlling submission can move or fall a certain way that results in unexpected results.
    We've all seen jabs that landed really well and resulted in a knockdown and a full blooded right cross that didn't.

    The destruction came about because Silva didn't turn his hip over - the check itself is ridiculously painful, but breaks are not common with it without the other party "contributing" towards it

    Once managed to do simultaneous roundhouses in sparring and collided shins. Bloody awful!
