After too long being complacent, I finally decided / realised that I'm unfit and overweight. As a result, I'm now working out three times a week, including personal training sessions with a guy who I swear is trying to kill me.

No questions at this point, just thought I'd share!

Good luck, and stick with it! :) I feel the same about my PT, and I'm sure some of my clients feel the same about me, but you'll get results :D

Yay Aegis! I put on rather than took off weight the past four months myself, unfortunately. I'm trying to reverse that now. Doh!

Need to do the same myself having missed a lot of training due to other commitments; it isn't any easier as I approach 50 either!

    Mobility, mobility, mobility.

That's the key as you get older.

    Then move.

It sounds so simple, but we don't move.

I don't warm up that hard any more, but I do lots of mobility drills.

I don't stretch that much, but I do lots of mobility drills that work my flexibility.

Flexibility isn't the ability to do the splits or touch your toes, it's the ability to twist and turn, to reach and bend.

We have a few videos on MAP that show BJJ solo drills, where one person rolls and twists around the floor and that is what I do more and more.

My broken body tried to like your post, then my brain slapped it and told it to go sit in the corner.

Update: an hour yesterday and an hour today.

I now ache pretty much everywhere and have trouble climbing the stairs.

Just a brief update - I've been hitting the gym for a little over 3 months and have lost 11kg so far - not a bad start. I'm also now able to exercise and then function properly the next day, so I'm clearly stronger and fitter than I was to begin with.

Very happy with the results, though I hope eventually to get to a point where I can maintain my weight and fitness without going to the gym four times a week!

    Excellent news.

It's inspiring to read, as I seem to be stuck in a fitness rut.

Far and away the hardest part was actually getting stuck in on day one. Since then it's been getting gradually easier and easier to maintain.

Wow, that is inspiring! I've been in a rut for several months -- no change in weight. I've been in class, but, obviously it's not enough. This and that and the other excuse, and ... you've inspired me, dude. Thanks. :)

Four and a half month in and I'm down 15kg (33lbs). Plus I can now comfortably (ish):
    • Run almost a mile to the gym (those who know me will know how much I abhor running, so this in itself is a major achievement!)
    • Continue my warmup with 10 minutes on treadmill, crosstrainer, stairs, bike or rowing machine
    • Hit weights for 50 minutes
    • Walk home for a bath!
I've noticeably slimmed down, my suits don't fit properly any more and everything just feels easier. I still have another 6 kg to lose before I'm at my initial target of 85kg, but I'm more confident than ever that I will achieve this early next year.
