I train at Sunderland Lau Gar now and trained under Robert for many many years. He's virtually retired now and just attends when there are gradings.
Robert rated Steve Babbs and Alfie Lewis very highly. He was graded as black sash with Master Yau and was required to fight Steve Babbs.
Roberts power was unbelievable for a man of his stature and his kicks were just as astonishing... He was born in Korea and was champiuon of Korea about 8 times at his weight in Taekwondo and I think this speaks volumes.. He didn't really traiin much here, but when he demonstrated something everyone was awestruck.
Sunderland moved to the kickboxing side unfortunately, but we still teach a lot of the kung fu as extra activities due to the kickboxing being so boring and shallow.
I'll always be a martial artist and to me that is very much the real Lau Gar...
I will often say to a class.. 'Do you want to study martial arts, or do you want to be a martial artist'?.. Strive for improvement and apply this to all aspects of your life and you won't go far wrong..

I also train with Chris Boughey at the Chorlton NWCKB club. It's by far the hardest I've ever been pushed out of the martial arts clubs I've been in and I really enjoy it.

Chris must have mellowed, you might still get the odd crack for dropping a guard, and he often invites you to see what a self defence technique feels like when done right, but he doesn't take liberties. It's all for our own benefit I'm sure :D

He doesn't take any messing though, you're there to train hard and enjoy his smelly carpet.

I haven't attended much of the Lau Gar there so can't comment much about that side, but I go to the weapons classes Chris teaches and they're excellent.

Sorry for the thread revival !

I trained with Chris from `86 to 90/91, at Bolton initially but by the end was doing the Manchester classes as well and Leyland Sports Centre on Saturdays.

There was a few of us at a similar level, Hazel, Darren, Andy ( now in Florida ), Paula and Pete. I think we were a close group and I loved my time there - even the batterings !

If anyone from those days reads this it would be great to get back in touch after all these years.

    Cheers,
