So today I bought a cheap 20 dollar metal Chinese Kung Fu/ Taichi fan. My plan was to use it as a fan at a convention I go to that is in a building that has very very bad air circulation. Well I just bought it today and already it is starting to come apart. I have had issues with fans in the past but not this quickly. Was wondering if anyone could recommend a good quality fan? I am not looking for top of the line but something that can withstand some play and actual use as a fan.

I have a couple of fans which are nylon on bamboo. I’ve had the older of the two for two years without any issues. Here’s an example of the type I mean. Kung Fu Bamboo Dragon Fan Tai Chi Training Martial Arts Taiji Dance Fighting | eBay

I could not find details of a specific manufacturer/brand to recommend. I’ve got mine through my tai chi teacher and through a martial arts supplier based here in the UK.

Lol I knew I forgot something. I am looking for a metal fan. The one I have now is metal and I would like one better.

Do you want one that you could use as a baton? Or just one that you can functionally use as a fan?

One that is used as a functional fan. I have seen the non-opening chunks of metal ones and thous look like they would make a good Sap and I might get one in the future. But for now I need a functional fan one.

Is there much space in your costume to carry it?

Not going to be wearing a costume. I will be carrying it in a messenger bag.

If you just need a fan to fan thyself at this convention just go buy a couple cheap but functional fans.Shouldn't cost more than 2 or 3 U$. You can always buy a better showpiece fan later. Most fans are made to be used and not fall apart right away.Fans in the real world really aren't a high ticket item.At all.

Unless one buys them for martial practices,I guess. $20 and falling apart so soon? Yike.

20 bucks for a fan is not at all a cheap price, and should buy a pretty well made (or at least an elaborately decorated hang on the wall) item.At least for a fan to be used for fanning.Sorry you bought junk-take it back, if sold as a "Kung Fu" fan it should at least hold up to all that snapping open and closed people do in their fan forms.

This is the model I got at a gun show in the US

I have also had these models that the cloth frayed after use and such.

I am not sure if their is a difference. And yes in the past when I have had fans I have "played" with them by opening and closing them. So maybe that is the reason for the fray on those but the one I bought that has now been thrown away literally started fraying like the next day.
