Hey guys. New here. Just wanna post this video to see what are your opinions on kung fu. Is it practical and lethal or do you disagree with others in saying that it is bullshido?

"Kung fu" is too wide a term to be useful really. So many styles and methods of practice.
Some of it is clearly bullshido nonsense while some of it is legit.

Hello! Welcome to MAP ^^ Hope you enjoy your stay.

In regards to the video, martial arts are all effective if you train them properly, the vast majority of traditional martial arts don't train in a realistic manner. Kung fu falls into that circle.

Also Roy Nelson is a great example of kung fu. He's not in the video.

The video above stated accounts of wing chun, Northern shaolin and sanda being used effectively. Sanda in my opinion, is the most legit of them all.

Though I agree, some like fake Taichi is clearly aesotheric bullshido. You really need to choose the style wisely or else. But in the video, when they are modified and used in a fight, they can be effective

Also...the days of style purity are long gone. Everyone feeds off everyone else.
Is MVP successful because he does/did Lau gar, he competed for years in freestyle/sport karate/semi-contact kickboxing, is athletically gifted, trained with london shootfighters to compete in MMA or because he mainly fought people well below his level and was protected by Bellator and has never faced a decent wrestler?
Personally I'd say the Lau Gar connection is the weakest and least influential element in that success so is a bit off to claim him as a "kung fu" success story.

And some tai chi is not (esoteric bullshido)

Effective techniques are effective and effective training produces people who can use them.

Ineffective training limits the exponent's ability to be effective and creates a culture where poor techniques develop unchecked.

Both of those things apply to 'kung fu'.

Hello and welcome to MAP.......may the sunshine forever warm your face without dazzling your eyes

Three of which are in a sporting context and of those only one is what could even approach being "pure" Kung Fu and not Cross trained (and even then I doubt he hasn't)

    Based on what?

Anything "fake" won't work, taiji or otherwise

Style needs to suit purpose - not everything is for a fight

When does this become "stone soup" though? (aka "Triggers broom")

    Welcome to MAP. :)

There is a big lack of quality control across schools labelled "kungfu", which is why you see these discussions pop up frequently.

SanDa is a rule set, you could call it a style also.
Like others have said, if you're not training it properly then it will not be effective.

Of the proportion of kungfu schools i know if in my area, for the majority, the syllabus and regular class content does not contain sufficient live training for it to become useable unless the student cross trains, at which point you're looking at the stone soup reference.

That's not too say that there aren't good kungfu schools, just that it's harder to find decent ones.

Hey, welcome to the mad... to MAP!
My old Sanda instructor is a good fighter, and the people he has taught Sanda to that compete can all hold up in sparring. That's because they regularly spar in training. The people he teaches the traditional side to can all perform the forms, and make them look beautiful, or work from a set technique to counter, but they don't spar at the same standard, because its a rare thing for them. :)

Yeah but in the ring you don't deal with people on drugs who feel no pain and will not think twice about biting your ears off... oh wait... :D

He competed in semi contact events under the lau gar banner and only trained with lau gar coaches to compete there, his stand up is pure semi contact lau gar and he wins the majority of his fights with the stand up taught to him by his dad in lau gar classes, in that sense he is way more a lau gar fighter than anything else,.... The problem is the traditional lau gar form guys will say what he does looks nothing like lau gar is meant to in a fight, but can't actually show what lau gar is meant to look like under pressure, which in itself is a microcosm view of what's wrong with a lot of tcma

My conclusion after 40+ years of reading history is that purists have always been the very rare exception.

Then they're ignoring a vital part of the real tradition.

If they spar only rarely whose fault is that? The instructor. So the instructor is perpetuating the deteriorated state of much of today's Wu Shu.

They spar less because it's not what the majority of them want from their training. The SanDa sessions are open to anyone who wants to do them, but it's not for everyone.

I don't want to speak for him but I think his point is that sparring should be mandatory if preserving the combative integrity of the school/system is a priority for the instructor and that if it isn't then they are contributing towards the somewhat diminished reputation of CMA.
