Sooooooo I heard there was a story about Tommy C, and a well known Scottish Jkd authority, if anyone wants to share, I'm up for the next four hours and have nothing to do.......

PMs are cool if that helps.......

Could you list Tommy's qualifications please.

His website doesn't list anything solid, and as you claim to teach The authentic Jkd method, some certification is the bare minimum required to be taken seriously.

I spoke to a student of the person I'm sure you are thinking of and had the story confirmed.

Yep.In spite of such teachers as above he had to "manage to piece together" etc. I guess none of his teachers had much but little fragments of JF/JKD.

It's comforting to know in these troubled times that at least one person has managed to "piece together" The Real JKD, as I surmise from your writing the vast majority of practitioners are on the wrong track.

Is JF/JKD built on any universal laws and science that Goju Ryu,Hsing I Ch'uan, Muay Thai and freestyle wrestling lack? If not, such a statement is moot.

What's so,40 years later, "ahead of its time" about JF/JKD?

P.S.-The real mess in JKD began when Linda started the brand name turf war.

Surely one of the biggest contributions to the "mess" of JKD is any time someone says "you lot ain't doing it right and we are!"
Within certain parameters and foundations multiple people can be following JKD but tread different paths and come to different conclusions?
IMHO one of the worst ways to approach it would be to get what Bruce was doing in his lifetime, set that in amber, and define JKD as "that" for ever more. That seems antithetical to what Bruce and JKD was all about.

I know nothing of Tommy Carruthers other than the online presence/attitude of his (claimed) students - that alone makes me unwilling to train with him.

I also don't believe in great man theory that's some how makes Bruce Lee the god of martial arts.

Ah! One of the true problems that many JKD exponents have when "selling" themselves is not everyone believes in the "mythology" surrounding Bruce - so you have to look at what else is on offer

If you take a Rick Young or an Erik Paulson it is self evident that they have an applicable skillset........much less so with others

The more I think about it the more I think Tommy Carruthers is just a mildly more successful and significantly less pudgy version of Emil Matromossian (you'll notice I can't spell his last name because who cares, and who can remember it anyway?)

Oh hello, I'd forgotten about him!

I think MAI was bankrolled by him at one point, with all the 'articles' they had about him.

He used to write for them. There is an interview on here with him too!

Shambles though. The David Brent of 'JKD'.

when I was training at Steve Powell's I was dead excite about what was on offer and all these things you would eventually be taught. I read Steves certifications on his website and they were bang on!
so I was dead excited googling JKD on YouTube etc and I come across a Mr Tommy Carruthers, this dude was fast against a student stood still, you should have seen him move, oh yeah he was slapping himself for extra effects. Then he was doing a few finger push ups with legs out in front of him. Damn I had to find more about this guy so I found him on Facebook and sent him a friend request, he accepted!
I posted on his wall something along the lines of thanks for the add, love your videos I've taken up JKD myself cant wait to see where my journey takes me.
within 5 minutes I got a notification, Tommy Replied " make sure its legit and not *expletives*
    wow, okay?
So I said its okay he's been certified by Rick Young, Rick Faye, Larry Hartsell, Dan Inosanto (seminar in Manchester) ,Paul Vunak etc
Well the response I got back was less than flattering by Him and his 15 followers who decide to pile on.
I was being told I'm learning fake JKD, Tommy replied nastily saying I'm clueless and posted the link confuse dot com to me and I should go ahead if I want to waste my money. So I said back how can it be? because Steve was certified by rick young himself, surely that's as credible as it gets or sets a high standard one would hope to get.
well nothing prepared me for what was to come next. all kinds of abuse came at me from "come down here and try it on us and see how far you would get" etc, then the real stuff started to fly with another chap who was supporting me and it got to a point where one of Tommy's student was literally saying lets swap numbers and meet up (not to me).
when tommy chipped in (not telling his supporters to stop this behaviour) carrying on his digs at me and the other chap each response got about 10 replies from his lot.

In the end I deleted him as friend because I have never seen anyone that horrible and nasty towards people who don't tow the line within the first few exchanges.
I still check on his profile now and then and I see is an aggressive, vindictive, jealous? individual. and his training videos that he uploads are far from impressive if you ask me. he does a lot of stick drawing trying to be like Bruce and its all over the top stickman figures for what can be seen as a basic jab cross and nothing more.
there's a video of his intercepting circle video on YouTube and someone commented on it that they done a seminar with tommy and it was basic kickboxing done badly.
oh yea I even mentioned grappling in our exchanges and that set them off even more. I referenced Gene lebell on Joe Rogans podcast how he introduced Bruce to grappling and Bruce loved it! and in return he taught Gene some kicks and some other bits and bobs … plus in Enter the dragon (amazing film) you see Bruce at the beginning pull of a submission and the guy tapping, its a catch wrestling move, barrel something I think!?
well again they all went off on one like they were packs of wolves, swearing at each other about me, swearing to me.
Tommys cult imo is basically the church of scientology of martial arts once you're in you're in and if you come out or question him then you better back up and apologise or get out of there quick!.
I even read somewhere he wont train people with credible martial art skills because they would have developed too many bad habits and most definitely not skilled or basic MMA students

No luck mate. Don't let it put you off JKD. There are two schools of thought on JKD and they're not really on talking terms for the most part.
