Finally managed to get a quick video done while waiting for a course to start today.

Please ask questions and I'll do a follow up.

Thanks Simon - I look forward to giving this the time it deserves, when I am off my phone, and near my laptop.

And there goes my excuse, that I have to wait for the video :(

Depending on my legs feel (Friday was torture  ) I will give this a try tomorrow.

Thank you very much for the video! Really appreciate that!

Ps.: Am I the only one who had to grin at the end, where Simon mentioned not to try something fancy but keep both feet on the ground in the beginning, while seeing how it seemed to twitch in his feet to at the very least be allowed to touch the ground after each other

    So, I tried earlier today.
I still suck at it ;)

But to give some useful info: My endurance is horrible, as I noticed.
My toes also don't hurt long, once I hit them, so there is that ;)

I somehow managed to hit my head with the rope several times , but I blame my uwagi
I also tried it in front of a mirror, so aside from being still useless at it, I saw some mistakes: My elbows are rather close to my body but my forearm moves to much, when I understood the description correct, as they tend to move a little; so the turning of the rope didn't only come out of wrist.
At least I think so! Not too easy for me to pay attention to that and not get entangled.

When it tried it, it also got stuck on my Gi, so next time I try out I will get rid of my uwagi, to check and be sure.

For some reason I'm having trouble to twist the rope properly; maybe due to moving forearms or because I'm still at a point where I am too dumb and it might get better with practice ;)
It feels like... hard to describe... like the rope gets to slack? Loose? Wobbly?

Will probably try again on Wednesday, when back at the dojo.

Only got as far as buying myself a new rope (old one was a tad short) and ended up choosing a (slightly) weighted one, which I am hoping will help with the minimal wrist movement (as opposed to full arm movement) on the whip round - But we shall see...

    ...Tomorrow :D

I got back on the skipping, remembered how bad it is getting into it, takes a while to get the rhythm back.

Turns out that my skipping 'game' is slightly stronger than I realised, with rope length (what is it they say about poor workers blaming their tools?) and timing being the 2 pre-existing issues.

The 1st issue was resolved with the purchase of the new rope, which lent itself to the 2nd issue, as the sound of the rope whipping on the flow now gave me a 'rhythm' to follow.

As a side note, and something I'd not previously mentioned, was that fact that I always seemed to do an (involuntary) double hop - Once over the rope, then an immediate little bounce into a second - but having an audible pace sound that I could follow allowed me to slow things down today, and consciously work on resolving this.

    Awesome.

As for the little double bounce try a few slow jumps with an exaggerated bending of the knees to absorb the impact.

    Glad the other tips helped.

Thanks - Where you were allowing a bend in your knee (explianed at the 1min 50sec mark) I was (previously) trying to absord all my impact solely with an ankle flex, completely negating my knees.

This might be a stupid question, but: I have two skipping ropes here.
One has a very slim handle/ grasp(?), the other has a bigger diameter.

Is there a rule, which of both is better or is it entirely up to what one prefers over the other?

I have similar, however that is because the wider handle is hollow so you can add small weights inside it.

    **Update time**

Progress has been pretty slow and elusive, but it is definitely there.

Also, I easily clipped my toes more times today, than in any other previous attempts, but the reasons for that are not all bad - Thanks to the tips in the video, I was able to regain the rhythm, when I felt it slipping, and thanks to the other posters in in this thread, I know that this is not an uncommon issue, which encouraged me to press on.

On a final and extremely frustrating note though, I managed to clip my toes on the final second of the very lest set...:mad::mad:

I have shot another video, but will probably re-do it before posting.

It's a follow up and explains what you can do when the rope actually hits your toes.

Excellent, as currently when I catch my toes I'm swearing under my breath, and hopping around on one foot, like Long John Silver at a line dancing luau - But I'm guessing your suggestion will be a lot more constructive than that, and for that I thank you! :)

    Why do we jump rope?

Well for one it's quite cool to be able to skip and put the kids to shame, but generally it's part of a warm up.

I'll show you how to continue to skip even when the rope stops turning.

So my daughter (9) and I are practicing our skipping together. She was upset that younger girls at schopl could do it and she couldn't. So out the front of the house we have a little practice so we support each other while we learn. Initially she couldn't do one but now has reached 15+ turns consistently and even got to 32 one time. She's well chuffed.
I find getting a consistent rhythm going tricky. I'm doing 3 minute rounds but find I hit my feet every 10-20 revolutions. I've managed as many as 70ish but can't seem to get a good plateau to build on really. It's very stop start.

You can tell somebody to make sure they jump on their toes, pull their toes back a bit like they're going to throw a front kick and keeping your shin muscles engaged, and make sure the rope is cut just to your arm pits and blah blah blah but the reality is that jumping rope is one of those exercises that you just have to get out and do until you get good at it. I just started skipping rope here and there again and luckily it has stayed with me, but oh boy do I remember the days of only being able to skip over 5-6 times without messing up.

I think Bruce Banner should never learn to jump rope.

Skipping for me has totally changed from the tutorials posted before.

Focus now is less on cardio and more on functional movements.

We work on the coiling core, which doesn't really need to be explained here, but the first two videos are ones I've been doing for a while, with the third one being the latest movement.

My current ropes are too thin, as they are speed ropes, so I am looking to purchase actual heavier rope.

I will be doing videos on these.
